Itinerary

Day 1: Melbourne

Arrive in Australia’s pop culture capital and start by dropping your bags into the hostel luggage room. Here, the staff will give you a free map of the city and answer any questions you might have. Then take the opportunity to explore the city. If art or architecture is your thing, you’re going to be blown away, so consider stopping by Federation Square, Southbank, and The Arts Centre. Finish your day by checking into your accommodation before enjoying the nightlife.

Day 2: Melbourne/Great Ocean Road

On today’s Great Ocean Day Trip, you’re going to explore the rugged, but stunning coastline of the beautiful south coast of Australia. A dip in Apollo Bay or a few selfies in front of the breathtaking Twelve Apostles will see you smiling from ear to ear, before finally finishing the day with a sunset by the water in St. Kilda.

Day 3: Melbourne/Philip Island

Today, your adventures take you on a Phillip Island and Penguin Parade Tour where you get shown the very best Phillip Island has to offer. Phillip Island is home to a colony of around 32,000 penguins. This day will include a nature walk along Phillip Island’s stunning beaches and boardwalks and you’ll get to spend time meeting some of the local furry residents. Then, at night comes the ultimate penguin experience, because on Phillip island, each night, hundreds of penguins emerge from the surf and waddle across the beach during the “Penguin Parade”. You will get some amazing knowledge passed on by your guide throughout the day and will arrive back to Melbourne with many new travel stories to tell your friends back home.

Day 4: Melbourne/Yarra Valley

If wineries are your thing, you’re going to love today as you embark on your Yarra Valley wine tour. You will spend the day seeing the sites of some of Australia’s most renowned wineries, tasting the goods, and eating local fresh foods. This is a care free, hair down kind of day, so go ahead and treat yourself.

Day 5: Melbourne

This is your final day of exploring Melbourne. If you’re a sporting fan, today is a great time to visit one of the many sporting grounds. If sports aren’t your thing, but perhaps food is more your style, check out one or two of the many bars, cafes, and restaurants as you laze the day away. With this being your last night at Nomads Melbourne, take the opportunity to venture into the CBD, find yourself a stellar meal, and gaze upon the city lights.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a lot to do in Melbourne CBD?

Melbourne holds a number of annual events and local attractions amongst the arts, music, and culture, so those traveling to, and even living in Melbourne, should for it quite easy to keep themselves entertained. For those looking to getaway, there are an abundance of great road trip destinations.

What are some options for destinations outside of Melbourne?

There’s many opportunities to see some more besides tall buildings, cafes, and historic buildings. Melbourne’s coast offers a range of beautiful places to see, such as taking a drive down The Great Ocean Road to experience some amazing natural wonders.

Are drinks and food in Melbourne expensive?

You can easily find pizza spots, noodle bars, and cafes where you can eat for cheaper at around 15-20$AUD. Melbourne is definitely the best place to eat cheaply in Australia, especially if you like Asian food, but you should be expecting to be paying 20-25$AUD in most sit-down restaurants without a drink.

Grab and go places cost around 10$AUD for sandwiches while fast food costs around 12$AUD. Beer, wine, and basic mixed drinks will cost you around 10-15$AUD. If you are looking to save some money on dining out, a week’s worth of food will cost you about 50-80$AUD.

When should I go to Melbourne?

Melbourne is a great spot year-round and there’s always so much to do. We think the best time of year to visit Melbourne between March to May, and then September to November. The temperatures are much more comfortable during this time, and it is also slightly less touristy.

Winter in Melbourne can be pretty cold and dreary, especially in comparison to Sydney or Brisbane. You will definitely get the best travel deals and rates on accommodation, so it might be worth your time regardless.

Where should I stay in Melbourne?

It really all depends on where you want to go, but we always recommend setting up camp in St. Kilda at Base Backpackers! Especially in warmer times of the year, we think this spot will be the best place to meet like-minded backpackers who are settling down in Australia and looking for all options of fun.
