Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, covering an area of 184,000 hectares and stretching over 120kms. Comprised of stunning lakes, tropical rainforest and a 75 mile beach this World Heritage site is natural beauty at it’s best.
Located off the Eastern Queensland coast, accessible by a short ferry ride from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Bay.
The island has over 100 freshwater lakes, including the iconic Lake Wabby and Lake Mckenzie, both breathtaking in colour and surrounded by white powdery sand and lush forest. Scenery on Fraser is both stunning and unique, with striking sand cliffs running along stretches of uninterrupted white beaches and rainforest over 200 metres high growing out of sand dunes, the only place in the world where you’ll ever see this.
Explore the untamed wilderness, float in crystal clear waters and take a 4WD adventure across sand dunes for an unforgettable experience!
Located in the Great Sandy National Park this perched lake is as great in size as it is in appearance; measuring an impressive 1,200 metres long, 930 metres wide and 5 metres deep.
The lake contains only rainwater which is prevented from draining away by the sand and organic matter that sits at the bottom.
You’ll be blown away by the white sandy shores and contrasting colours of the lake, starting from crystal clear to dazzling aqua and finishing in a vivid deep blue.
The stunning powdery sand surrounding the lake making it so picturesque is also what gives the lake it’s amazing clarity, it’s fine grains act as a natural filter making it so pure very little aquatic life can exist here, but perfect for you to take a swim in!
At more than 11 metres deep Lake Wabby is the deepest of all the lakes on Fraser. It is both a barrage and a window lake; barrage lakes are formed by moving sand dunes blocking the waters of a natural spring and window lakes are formed by a natural valley in the sand exposing the water table. Unlike the other lakes on Fraser, Wabby is home to several varieties of fish including rainbow fish and the rare honey blue eye fish.
The impressive emerald green freshwater of Lake Wabby is framed on one side by giant sand dunes perfect for relaxing on and appreciating the idyllic scenery in front of you.
This impressive stretch of sand is one of the few beaches in the world that is also a National Highway so hop in a 4WD and make the most of this unique opportunity.
Along the way stop off at Maheno shipwreck to learn about it’s history, float along the fast flowing waters of Eli Creek and climb the volcanic rock formation of Indian Head for amazing 360° views and a chance to spot manta rays and sharks.
Another experience not to miss while exploring these vast golden sands is Champagne Pools; a natural jacuzzi formed by waves crashing over volcanic rocks and creating foaming pools.
Swimming is not recommended at 75 mile beach due to strong currents but luckily there’s plenty of other safe places to take a dip while on Fraser!
