Giant green sea turtles are found around the Great Barrier Reef and are frequently sighted at Fitzroy Island. Reef sharks are quite common and a wonderful sight to see.

Can you swim at Fitzroy Island all year round?

Due to its position in Tropical Far North Queensland, visitors to Fitzroy Island are able to enjoy warm water for swimming and water activities all year round.

Are there Crocs at Fitzroy Island?

Saltwater crocodiles won’t come this far out to the reef so you don’t need to worry about those! Plus, the water around Fitzroy Island is warm and clear year-round, making it excellent for swimming. If you don’t want to swim, you can opt for the iconic glass-bottom boat tour.

When is the best time to go to the Great Barrier Reef?

The Great Barrier Reef is beautiful all year round. The stinger season is from around November to May. It is unlikely that box jellyfish would be encountered at Fitzroy Island due to the 4 km passage between the island and the mainland, but they have been found there occasionally, as well as other stinging jellyfish. During this time it is recommended to wear a stinger suit. These are available on the island.
