Tour Description

Kakadu National Park in Australia’s Northern Territory is an incredible place to explore – full of unique wildlife, beautiful landscapes and some spectacular waterfalls.

And there’s no better way to see what it has to offer than this 5 day, 4 night 4WD adventure with the crew of Territory Expeditions!

After departing from Darwin you’ll head into the heart of Kakadu, with special permit access to Kaolin Gorge, which allows an even more unique perspective on this part of Australia.

You’ll enjoy scenic hikes through this rugged landscape, stopping off for a refreshing swim or amazing views at spots like Jim Jim Falls, Barramundi Gorge, Nourlangie Rock and Gunlom Falls just to name a few!

Throughout your trip you’ll learn more about the cultural significance of the area, meet some of the local wildlife, enjoy sunset cruises along the river and kick back by the fire in the evening before camping under the stars.

Kakadu National Park
The 5 Day 4WD Kakadu Tour explores Kakadu National Park at its best.You visit the special permit area of Koolpin Gorge as well as seeing Jim Jim Falls, the top of Twin Falls, Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), Nourlangie Rock, Ubirr and Gunlom Falls. This tour is designed for the fit and active and you'll encounter heaps of local wildlife along the way.
Itinerary

Day 1
Pick up from you accommodation at around 6.30am. Drive to Kakadu via the old Jim Jim Road stopping off at white lily billabong to stretch the legs and some morning tea. Then it's off to Gunlom Falls for a hike to the top of the waterfall for amazing views and a swim in the refreshing pools. Explore the sandy beach at the base of the falls that leads to a large plunge pool. Tonight you camp at Gunlom by the waterfall, away from the crowds & under the stars.

Day 2
You spend the whole day exploring the magnificent Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge), this is a special permit access area that is recognised for its cultural and environmental sensitivity. Koolpin Gorge is in the southern corner of Kakadu National Park, not far from Gunlom Falls. The walk up the gorge is a real wilderness hike and requires a good level of fitness with amazing rewards on arrival to some of the National Parks most spectacular rock pools, landscapes and waterfalls. This remote location is restricted to only 40 people per day and it home to a number of endemic species of fauna. Return to you camp at Gunlom and tonight we enjoy a dinner cooked on the campfire.

Day 3
This morning you drive north to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) where you have the entire day to hike, explore and swim in serene swimming holes. A 4-wheel drive adventure takes you to your destination. Take a 1km walk through paperbark and monsoon forest then along a sandy and rocky creek to a waterfall that leads us to a beautiful clear plunge pool. There are small interconnected pools among the rocks that flow into a small lake. The guide will share a few secret swimming holes here including a little secret passage under water connecting two pools. Here we will also have lunch then a bit more exploring before you make your way further north to Jim Jim Falls. Tonight you camp at your exclusive safari camp at Garnamarr, at the base of the escarpment.

Day 4
After breakfast you do some 4 Wheel driving to Twin Falls. From here take the escarpment walk to the top of the falls for a swim in the crystal clear pools. Then you find a shady spot by Jim Jim Creek for some lunch. A short climb up Budjimi Lookout will reward you with spectacular views of the ancient Arnhemland escarpment. After lunch, a 1km hike through monsoonal vine forest to the base of Jim Jim Falls for a relaxing afternoon dip in the plunge pool and chilling on the beach. Tonight you camp at Mardugal.

Day 5
This morning you visit Nourlangie Rock, an ancient aboriginal occupational and art site, you can explore these sites before walking up to Gunwhardewharde lookout for an exceptional view of the region including Arnhemland. You then stop off to visit Bowali information centre. As you make our way back to Darwin, call in to the Mamakala wetlands to see the incredible bird life. Finish your Kakadu tour with a wildlife cruise on the spectacular Corroborree Billabong. This is a great opportunity to get fantastic photos of the local wildlife. Head back to Darwin, returning at approximately 5.30pm.

Difficulty: Designed for the very fit and active, a reasonable level of fitness is required.

The 5 day tour departs from Darwin on Tuesdays- June to September. Pick ups from accommodation 06.30am - 7am
