Itinerary

Day 1: Cairns City

Today starts with your arrival into Cairns. Start by checking into your accommodation before taking a dip in the waterfront lagoon. After your quick dip, grab a bite to eat before you explore the city’s local sites and attractions. Finish up the day with a meal at one of the many stellar restaurants that Cairns has to offer.

Day 2: Waterfall Day Tour

Up and at it! Today’s waterfall tour is one of the must see days out. You will get picked up near your accommodation and taken on a highlights tour of the rainforests, waterfalls, and swimming holes in the Atherton Tablelands, some of the most beautiful nature that Australia has to offer. You can snap a hair flick selfie at Milla Milla falls, slide down a natural rock slide, and swim in a giant crater lake, all while being guided by super knowledgeable local guides in a small tour size air conditioned bus.

Day 3: Great Barrier Reef

Head out today on the Great Barrier Reef on the boat. You will meet at the marina, board the boat, and be whisked away to the world famous Great Barrier Reef, where you will spend the day gazing upon colourful corals and reef fish, as well as, take part in a scuba dive included in your trip. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned diver, there is a lot to love about this day out on the water.

Day 4: Daintree Rainforest

Today, you head up to Cape Tribulation in the Daintree Rainforest, known as a hotbed of wildlife and tropical plants. It’s an eco-warrior paradise. You will get picked up from your accommodation by your quirky and knowledgeable guide and journey north, stopping at remote beaches and pristine water holes as you go. Once you arrive in the Daintree Rainforest, you will take part in a crocodile cruise along the river, spotting the dinosaurs in their natural habitat. On the way back down, you will stop off at a few viewing points to take in the scenery before being dropped back at your accommodation just in time for a night out.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own gear for visiting the Great Barrier Reef?

Not at all. The boat and tour you decide to visit the Great Barrier Reef with should supply you with all the necessary items you need to enjoy the underwater reef life.

Is there a lot of dangerous wildlife in Far North Queensland?

Australia’s rugged, contrasting landscape and diverse wildlife can sometimes strike fear into the inexperienced traveller. This really doesn’t need to be the case though – when you understand your environment, you’ll truly start to appreciate it.

While there are animals in the Australian wildness that can hurt or even kill you, with a little knowledge and a lot of responsible behaviour, you’ll be as safe as ever.

We suggest having a peak online at local Cairns wilderness tour websites, brushing up on the natives of the area, and learning how to handle the environment in case something does happen.

What does a daily breakdown of costs in Cairns look like?

Let’s break this down for you (on a budget of course!)

  • Hostel Dorm: $15AUD-$20AUD
  • Basic Room For Two: $200AUD
  • AirBnB/Temp Apartment: $80AUD
  • Average cost of public transport: $3AUD
  • City-Airport Transfer: $15AUD-$30AUD
  • Sandwich: $7AUD-$9AUD
  • Beer at a bar: $5AUD-$8AUD
  • Coffee: $3AUD-$4AUD
  • Bottle of wine from the market: $2AUD-$8AUD
  • Dinner for two: $35AUD-$45AUD

Should I travel Cairns with a water bottle?

100% yes. Not just because the temperatures can get pretty hot year round and leave a nice trace of humidity which will leave you quite thirsty, but mainly because of protecting the pristine underwater environment, tablelands, and rainforest. You aren’t going to save the world overnight, but you might as well be part of the solution and not the problem.

Travel with your own water bottle, avoid buying plastic from the stores, and never waste a cent nor a turtle’s life again.

Can Happy Travels assist us with some backpacking tips around the area? There's so much to do!

Yes! Of course we can! We’ve put together a few tips for you below!

  • If you are on a budget, always have a few drinks before you go out instead of spending your whole wallet at local bars, as the prices can start to climb fast.
  • If you are looking to venture into wilderness and enjoy a bit of a roadtrip, definitely don’t be afraid to invest in a portable camper stove so you can save heaps of cash, and enjoy your own 5 star meal under moonlight.
  • Take advantage of all of the happy hours! Plenty of bars & restaurants offer drink and meal deals, which can be very affordable.
  • Don’t forget about all of the free attractions! There’s plenty of stuff to do in Cairns and the surrounds that don’t charge you any sort of entrance fee, and none of them are dull or boring either.

If you need any further tips, don’t be afraid to open up a chat on our website, give us a buzz, or email us with any questions or concerns.

There is definitely no wrong way. We recommend either taking a WHIMIT or Hop on Hop off bus pass such as Greyhound or renting a campervan with some mates and hitting the open road.
