Always dreamed of making a stop at this famous surf town along the East Coast of Australia? There is more than meets the eye than just fashion, bohemian lifestyle, and sun drenched golden surf hair. We’re here to let you in on some backpacker style activities you and your mates can get onto while visiting The Bay.
1. Dance The Night Away At Coco Republik
You’ve not partied as a backpacker in Byron Bay until you’ve danced with your mates at Byron Bay’s fortnightly party, Coco Republik! It’s one of the most famous electronic parties on the East Coast and the perfect event to have a proper boogie with your friends to the sounds of the underground music culture.
2. Sunrise/Sunset At The Lighthouse
The walk to the most easterly point of Australia also includes a stop at Cape Byron Lighthouse, with some incredible views along the coast and amazing beaches to cool off at. If you’re an early riser, the sunrise here is incredible, or for those who aren’t morning people, a sunset stroll is the perfect way to end the day!
3. Learn To Surf
Byron has some incredible beaches and world class waves for all surfing levels. It’s also the perfect place to learn to surf too, so book yourself a surf lesson in Byron Bay and go get your froth on! 4. Take A Day Trip To Nimbin
Best described as the Amsterdam of Australia, Nimbin is a quirky and unique place to explore! Jump on board the Grasshopper tour bus to Nimbin and head to this alternative hippie paradise surrounded by sun soaked mountains and smiling faces.
5. Go Kayaking With Dolphins
Byron Bay is all about the ocean and nature, so one of the most popular things to do in Byron is kayaking with dolphins! Launch from Clarkes Beach and head out around the coastline, check out the famous surf spot, “The Pass”, and around to Wategos for a warm hot chocolate and some snacks! Your awesome guides will tell you more about the marine life in the area and will give you a solid chance of spotting the local dolphins, turtles, and whales!
6. Scuba Dive At Julian Rocks
If you really want to get up close and personal with marine life, then make sure you head out to Julian Rocks for a scuba dive! This marine reserve is home to some incredible creatures, including leopard sharks, grey nurse sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and schools of colourful fish! Whether you want a certified dive, give scuba diving a go for the first time with an introductory dive, or do a full scuba dive course. This is one of the best dive sites in Australia!
7. Enjoy The Street Music
Byron Bay’s alternative and artistic vibes mean the streets are full of the sounds of buskers, so take some time to soak up the sounds when wandering around town! If you’re super lucky you might even catch an impromptu acoustic set from the likes of Wolfmother, Ziggy Alberts, Tones & I, or other famous bands who spend time in the Bay!
8. Ditch Your Shoes
Barefoot wandering is a Byron way of life, so harden up your feet, ditch your footwear, and embrace your free spirit!
9. Kick Back With Some Serious Beach Time
Life in Byron Bay is very much focused around the beach so go out and explore the awesome stretches of sand. From the easily accessible Main Beach to the quieter Cosy Corner at Tallows, or Belongil Beach, close to the Treehouse Bar & Restaurant for great eats, there’s plenty of space to lay out a towel, slap on some sunscreen, and enjoy the Aussie heat!
10. Don’t Leave!
Heaps of backpackers head to Byron Bay for a few days and don’t end up leaving for a few months! The Byron Bay bubble is an epic place to stay and play, so why not enjoy the good vibes a while longer?!
