Example Itinerary

Day 1: Sydney → Overnight Bus

Your East Coast adventure begins in iconic Sydney. Spend the day ticking off world-famous sights like the Sydney Opera House or relaxing at Bondi Beach before meeting your crew. Tonight, hop on the overnight bus as you head north to Byron Bay and your first taste of coastal Australia.

Day 2-4: Byron Bay

Wake up in laid-back Byron Bay and settle into one of Australia’s most loved beach towns. Kick things off with a half-day surf lesson, your first proper introduction to Aussie waves and coastal living.

Explore Byron at your own pace, from the Cape Byron Lighthouse walk with epic ocean views to The Farm’s local food scene. Chill on the beach, wander boho cafés, and soak in the relaxed vibe.

Next, head out on a 3.5-hour dolphin kayaking tour around Cape Byron. Paddle past the lighthouse and spot wild dolphins, turtles, and rays before spending your afternoon back on the sand.

Day 5: Surfers Paradise

Travel to the Gold Coast and arrive in Surfers Paradise, Australia’s answer to Miami. Explore the beachfront, snap a pic at the iconic sign, and dive into the buzzing nightlife with your travel crew.

Day 6-7: Brisbane

Continue to Brisbane, the Sunshine State’s river city. Check in and explore riverside parks, food spots, and nightlife along the Brisbane River.

Spend your full day discovering the city or heading out on an included adventure, choose between Moreton Island’s Tangalooma Wrecks, Australia Zoo, or a scenic Brisbane River cruise.

Day 8-10: Noosa

Head north to Noosa, a stunning mix of beaches, boutiques, and national parks. Spend your first day exploring or simply relaxing into the Sunshine Coast lifestyle. Take on a magical Noosa Everglades canoe experience, paddle through mirror-like waterways surrounded by untouched wilderness and rare wildlife.

Enjoy a relaxed final day before your Fraser Island briefing, exploring Hastings Street, Noosa National Park, or the beach.

Day 11-13: K’gari (Fraser Island)

Jump into 4WDs and set off for K’gari, the world’s largest sand island. Drive 75 Mile Beach, swim at Eli Creek, explore rainforest at Central Station, and visit the Maheno Shipwreck.

Camp under the stars and explore highlights like Lake Wabby, Champagne Pools, Indian Head Lookout, and coloured sands at the Pinnacles.

Finish your adventure at Lake McKenzie, white silica sands and crystal-clear water, before returning to Noosa for a well-earned celebration.

Day 14: Noosa → Overnight Bus

Enjoy a final relaxed morning in Noosa before boarding your overnight bus to Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsundays.

Day 15-16: Airlie Beach

Arrive in Airlie Beach and soak up the tropical vibes. Explore the lagoon, hike Honeyeater Lookout, and enjoy the backpacker nightlife.

Take to the skies on an optional scenic flight over the Whitsundays, Heart Reef, and Whitehaven Beach before preparing for your sailing adventure.

Day 17-19: Whitsundays

Set sail through the Whitsunday Islands, snorkelling coral reefs, swimming in turquoise waters, and relaxing on deck as you cruise through paradise.

Visit Whitehaven Beach and hike to Hill Inlet Lookout for the iconic swirling sands. Spend your days exploring, snorkelling, and island hopping before nights under the stars on the boat.

Day 20: Airlie Beach

Enjoy a free day to relax or go big with optional skydiving over the Whitsundays. Swim in the lagoon or explore the coastline at your own pace.

Day 21-22: Magnetic Island

Travel to Magnetic Island, a tropical escape filled with beaches, wildlife, and laid-back island life. Relax at your beachside stay with a welcome drink.

Explore at your own pace; hire a “Barbie Car,” discover hidden bays, or hike the Forts Walk for sweeping views and koala spotting in the wild.

Day 23-28: Cairns

Arrive in Cairns, your tropical North Queensland base in Australia’s adventure capital. Explore the night markets, lagoon, and buzzing backpacker scene.

Dive into the Great Barrier Reef on a small-group snorkel or dive experience, then explore waterfalls, swimming holes, and rainforest scenery in the Atherton Tablelands.

Enjoy free days in Cairns with optional adventures like bungy jumping, white-water rafting, or a Cape Tribulation & Daintree Rainforest tour.

Wrap up your East Coast adventure in Cairns. We hope you’ve had the best month of your life discovering the highlights and hidden gems of this iconic stretch of coast. If you’re not ready to head home just yet, check out other unmissable locations like Uluru and the Red Centre, the West Coast, or even zip over to Bali, Thailand, or Japan. Adventure awaits!

Isabella Janas and Molly Frost 13/03/2026

Matt honestly made our experience so easy and stress free — planned out everything we wanted to do and managed to do it below budget. Will definitely be coming back for any further trips we book. Thanks Matt!

Callum Andrews (activities) 12/03/2026

Matt has been helpful from start to finish with adjusting to our budget changes and fitting in as many activities as possible. Will definitely be going through Happy Travels again.

Beata Berglund (verified) 12/03/2026

Matt was super fast and efficient which was really appreciated when trying to get everything sorted quickly!

Emily Reynolds (last minute) 10/03/2026

I have had the most amazing experience booking with Happy Travels. Excellent service, network and flexibility when booking my trip to Australia. This was a last-minute trip for myself, leaving within two weeks, and Freya was absolutely faultless. She spent time to understand my likes and interests and carefully curated a plan to fit my exact needs — a complete credit to the company!

Molly (Audrey & Oli) 09/03/2026

Audrey and Oli helped to secure my booking. They were both super helpful with giving me all the information I needed and helping me make the right decision for the trip I had in mind. I felt very supported throughout the whole process — I couldn't recommend Happy Travels and Audrey & Oli more!

Carla Anne (Ryan) 09/03/2026

My sister and I are going to Aus over Christmas and were unsure of what to do or where to go. Ryan from Happy Travels sent us regular messages and voice notes and responded promptly to any queries. When we arranged calls he was flexible and very informative — as well as easy to get along with. We'd happily book through Ryan again!

Jack Roberge (east coast week) 09/03/2026

Chatted with Matt from Happy Travels today, and he was an absolute lifesaver. We showed up pretty late to the game, and he hooked us up with an awesome week. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for help with figuring out their travels!

Maeva Winzap 09/03/2026

Coby was great, we basically planned our whole trip with him.

Amy (Ryan - Cairns) 07/03/2026

We had a wonderful experience with this company, even though we didn't originally book with them. Ryan was incredibly helpful when we stopped by for assistance. He went out of his way to call the travel agency we had booked with and helped sort out the logistics for our Kuranda Railway and Skyrail trip. He also recommended visiting Crystal Cascades, which turned out to be a fantastic suggestion. Ryan truly went above and beyond.

Jonathan Jensen 07/03/2026

Lauren really did a good job in creating my amazing itinerary. She was very helpful, understood my needs and was very patient. Looking so much forward to my trip and she said I could text her if I had any questions.

Nathan Hodgkinson (campervan) 05/03/2026

Oli helped beat the price of the campervan on the direct website and made the process quick and simple.

Liberty Mather (Elisa) 05/03/2026

Elisa was amazing!! We were shocked with how helpful and easy the whole process was. She has such a lovely way of explaining things with extensive knowledge of each place. It made the whole thing such a fun experience rather than the usual chore booking things for a trip. Couldn't recommend her enough!

Bethan (Harry - Byron) 05/03/2026

Just booked 3 weeks worth of accommodation, activities and travel with Harry in Byron Bay. The process was so smooth and he talked through every step and answered every question! Would definitely recommend!

I went to the location in Kings Cross. Because Vera has a lot of experience of the Australian coast, she could help me very well. I'm very happy with what she organised for me!

Toby Sinclair 25/02/2026

Dan V from Happy Travels in Airlie Beach was a superstar. One of the days all my activities were cancelled from the rain and I had nothing to do. Went to him and within 5 mins I had a jetski tour and reef snorkelling booked. Saved my day completely!

Courtz L 25/02/2026

Great team, prompt and polite service — thanks Audrey for a great deal and your time, and to the team that helped make this booking so seamless. Will definitely pass on to family and friends.

Noa 22/02/2026

Our hostel recommended this place to us. We didn't know anything about it and honestly weren't expecting much — we just came in to understand the Greyhound schedule better. Matt has been helpful from start to finish whether it's adjusting to our budget changes and fitting in as many activities as possible. Can't knock his service at all.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to travel Australia?

There is definitely no wrong way. We recommend either taking a WHIMIT or Hop on Hop off bus pass such as Greyhound or renting a campervan with some mates and hitting the open road. If you feel like getting pretty adventurous and want to get amongst the true Australian terrain, a 4WD may be better suited for you. Enquire now and we can help you find the most suitable transport option.

Do I need insurance when travelling to Australia?

Before your visit, you should arrange a sufficient and helpful medical and travel insurance. You should make sure the policies are adequate to cover costs for any possible emergency, including ambulance, boat, or helicopter rescue.

What do I need to know about driving in Australia?

Australians drive on the left hand side of the road. The steering wheel is on the right hand side of the car. Maximum speed limits in cities and towns do not exceed 60km/h and on highways/country roads, they range from 100km/h-110km/h. Strict drink-driving laws apply and drivers/passengers must wear seat belts at all times.

Does every town have hostel or budget friendly accommodation?

Most small cities and towns do offer hostels or some type of budget accommodation, but if not, we recommend being prepared with appropriate camping gear in case you want to go off the normal track.

What if something comes up and I can't make my tour?

We get it. Life is all about the unexpected, especially when you are travelling. If you are unable to make your pre-arranged tour you will need to reach out to our support email so we can give you a helping hand. In all cases we strongly recommend having a valid travel insurance policy which covers you for unexpected cancellations.

What is the best time of year to travel the East Coast?

It really depends on where you are going! Summers (December-February) brings the warmest temperatures, but in Far North Queensland, the cooly dry season from April to November is the best time to visit. Winter in Australia can get wet, but hardly every drops before 12C.

There are plenty of things to do in Australia year round, so it is quite difficult to get bored with loads of festivals, nightlife, adventures, and beautiful natural sights to see.

What do I do if I need help with my existing package booking?

If you need help with an existing booking please email us at [email protected], if your enquiry is urgent please follow up your email with a quick call on +61 2 5633 1149.

Do you offer payment plans?

Absolutely, we understand that paying off a big trip in one go isn’t always that easy. We offer flexible payment plans to suit all types of travellers with zero interest or fee’s (minimum $100AUD deposit required).

Do I need travel insurance?

We endorse the recommendation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that all travelers take out travel insurance. If you already have Travel Insurance please understand that it is your responsibility to ensure that your Travel Insurance covers you for all of the adventure style travel you have booked with us.

Can I book a package but travel in the reverse direction?

Absolutely, just let us know your preferred start and finish location and we’ll make it work.
