Fiji is absolutely bursting with a variety of activities to partake in, memories to be made, and many sunsets to be watched. Chill out, slow down, and get ready to adjust to that Fiji time and kick back into the easy life.
Decked from head to toe in white sand beaches, aquamarine waters, lush volcano landscapes, the happiest people in the world, and coconut filled palm trees, Fiji makes for a truly paradisiacal setting. The archipelago made, made up of more than 300 islands, has rich culture with good food and a joie de vivre attitude at its heart. It is a commonly known fact that Fiji is a bucket list destination and there is definitely more to do here than just relax on the beach. Fiji is completely free for any avid traveler to tailor their trip to their preferences with so much adventure, culture, and gastronomy to enjoy. Whether you are looking for a high end romantic getaway, a group getaway, or an adrenaline fueled adventure, Fiji’s islands have so much and more to offer.
Upon landing into Fiji, you’ll see the multicultural hub of Nadi from the air. This pint-sized city is located just a short drive from the international airport and is a great location to kick off your Fijian adventure. A mixture of stores align the roads in rainbow colours, with everything from handcrafted clothes, jewels, and native Fijian items.
The real danger here (for your weight at least) are the array of local food markets, which is a real trick on the senses. Be ready to be carried to food heaven from beautiful Fijian gastronomy and fresh island produce. Another must visit spot in the city is the Sri Siva Subramaniya Hindu Temple located downtown at the southern end of the main road. This spectacular temple, the largest in the Pacific, features historic intricate carvings that could keep your eyes busy for days.
Nadi is the perfect induction to Fiji and the best option before making your way around the islands.
Local tip: Before entering a Hindu temple, always seek permission and remove your shoes. Photography is generally OK outside the temple but don’t take photos inside.
Yasawa means “heaven” in Fijian and this string of islands is certainly heavenly. The archipelago, located in the northwest, comprises around twenty islands of varying size with palm-lined beaches, aquamarine waters, dramatic topography, and wondrous caves.
Despite the remote location of the island chain, the majority of the islands are inhabited and many feature quality resorts and hotels. The best way to get around is aboard the Yasawa Flyer ferry, which offers various passes for hopping on and hopping off, departing daily from Port Denarau Marine close to the airport and stops at more than 12 of the islands.
Awesome Adventures is definitely the way to go with the abundance of packages that they offer which are suited across all demographics to help you enhance your holiday experience through the Yasawa Islands.
Located just twenty minutes from the airport, the small island of Denarau makes for a great setting for families, groups, and romantic getaways alike with everything you need on the doorstep. The outcrop, connected to the mainland via a bridge, has been developed into a luxury tourism spot complete with a state-of-the-art marina, five star resorts, world class dining, and a top notch golf course.
Port Denarau is also home to the gateway to explore the Fijian islands, where you can easily get around from island to island.
If you are thinking of where those postcards you want to send your relatives for the holidays come from, this is probably what you are thinking of, the best island renowned for its beauty, Kuata. Let your worries wash away with a stay here. Part of the Yasawa archipelago, this place makes for a heavenly retreat with just one hotel, secluded beaches, secret caves, and some great hiking trails.
The Barefoot Resort features a scattering of luxury safari-style tented rooms and beachfront bures (traditional wood straw huts) or there are dorms if you’re traveling on a budget. Facilities include an open-air restaurant, bar, and a swimming pool, complete with a hammock for some Instagrammable holiday shots. The island is one the best stops made by the Yasawa Flyer ferry.
As an extra trip, definitely consider hiring a guide and head up Kuata’s volcanic summit. It’s a strenuous uphill walk but you’re rewarded with dramatic views.
Fiji isn’t just known for its exotic white sandy beaches, fringing palm trees, and clear waters. There’s another reason why the people here are so happy, and what makes everyone happy? Food! The city of Lautoka, located on the west coast of the main island, is known for the best local Fijian cuisine. Dive into an array of mouther-watering dishes here. With many dining experiences such as Tukuni, they tend to overlook the sweeping bay of the west coast.
Experience Fijian cuisine traditionally be cooked over an open fire with popular dishes including ika tavu (smoked fish) and kokoda (marinated fish in coconut milk). There’s also a huge selection of vegetarian and vegan options that include rourou (taro leaves). The experience of Fijian gastronomy doesn’t just extend to the food, but also extends to its hospitality, making for an authentic, cozy, and friendly experience.
Fijian food offers a unique fusion of flavours with a Pacific take on cuisines from India and beyond. Staples such as sweet potato, cassava, and taro are cooked with fish, vegetables, and coconut; curries are generally milder and lighter here.

Fiji can be expensive but it depends on where you stay. There is a mixture of premium and budget accommodation providers. Food also can be expensive if you opt for a more luxury experience as you are travelling in extremely remote and secluded islands. It all depends on what type of experience you are looking for. One of our friendly travel specialists can help you find the best options that fit into your budget.
By far the most popular time to travel to Fiji is between May & September. This is during the ‘dry season’ when you can expect warm weather and blue skies. Between October to April, this is considered the ‘Wet Season’ which is when Fiji experiences more rainfall.
During the Wet Season, it is possible to travel as you go and remain spontaneous (apart from during school holidays). The rest of the year can get very busy and with limited, remote accommodation so with it being such a popular destination we would 100% recommend pre-planning.
There is only one main boat operator to take you between islands and with limited departure times, you must have accommodation pre-booked before getting on the boat. If you want to be flexible, we recommend booking a ‘Bula Pass’ and then you can book in your accommodation at a later date.
Fiji operates on ‘Fiji Time’ which stems from the relaxed and chilled out way of life. This can create issues if you are trying to remain spontaneous as you may end up on an island with nowhere to stay.
Generally speaking, Fiji is a very safe place to visit and most travellers have a great time. The islands in particular have a very safe and laid back atmosphere. We always recommend travelling smart wherever you go to avoid any possibility of losing an item to theft. We also believe it is very important to remain respectful to locals and their cultures at all times to have the most fun on your trip.
Hands down the best way to meet people will be on the boat trips between each island and in the resorts themselves. You can also ask our friendly travel specialists for information on booking group tours so you will meet like minded travellers.
You will need to fly into Nadi Airport to access the beautiful islands of Fiji. From there, if you book with us, we can organise a pre & post night of accommodation which includes complimentary airport transfers as well as transfer to and from Port Denarau where you will head out to the islands.
