Byron Bay

Destination Information

One of Australia’s most famous surf towns, Byron Bay is a popular destination for it’s beautiful beaches, relaxed vibe and alternative lifestyle. Full of natural beauty, including plenty of idyllic white beaches, crystal clear waters and tropical rainforest.

With magic in its soul, this place can be seen sparkling from high above. It’s little wonder that its community has one of the highest concentrations of surfers, outdoor enthusiasts, musicians, artists, movers, and shakers from around the globe. If you need reminding of what it’s all truly about, then get yourself to Byron and reconnect with life.

Kayak with the dolphins that are regularly spotted playing in the waves along with the surfers, and throughout May to October you can take a boat trip to observe the magnificent humpback whales as they migrate from Antarctica to the warmer waters for their mating season.

Byron is also a great location for skydiving, with incredible views of the spectacular beaches and hinterland all the way to Brisbane. Another place to appreciate the stunning views is from the Cape Byron Lighthouse. Take the lighthouse walk along the coast and through patches of rainforest to reach Australia’s most easterly point, where looking out to the vast sea you’ll often spot dolphins, whales and turtles. Nearby attractions include Nightcap National Park, home to the breathtaking Minyon Falls and Protester Falls. With heaps of art, hippy culture and friendly vibes Byron Bay is the perfect place to cheer up, slow down, chill out.

Surfing at The Pass, Wategos Beach, & Tallows Beach

With its warm waves, turquoise waters, and mountainous hinterland backdrops, why wouldn’t you want to go surfing in Byron Bay? Steeped in surf culture from the hedonistic 60’s and 70’s, surfing isn’t a sport, it’s a right of passage, a sense of freedom, a poetic expression of connection in tune with its natural surroundings. Whether you’re a rookie or a pro, there’s a wave for everyone. From the protected bay, there’s longboard waves and good vibes for all to be found at The Pass & Wategos Beach, and for those wanting to push it a little harder, there’s always Tallows Beach. Give us a shout if you would like to book a surf lesson at one of the several surf schools in Byron Bay, as we highly recommend getting out there with the pros. Our favourites are Mojo Surf. They sure know their way around a break.

Julian Rocks “Nguthiungulli” Nature Reserve

This has to be one of the best dive and snorkel spots in Australia. It’s one of few places where the warm tropical waters of the north meet the temperate waters of the south. That means this place plays host to one giant marine life party like you’ve never seen before, where species from the Great Barrier Reef meet species from the deep south oceans for the very first time.

You’ll probably want to hitch a ride out with our friends at Byron Bay Dive Centre, accessible via a short 5 minute boat ride from the main beach. All of the tours are conducted within the Cape Byron Marine Park and Julian Rocks Nature Reserve which is classed as a sanctuary zone, the highest level of protection for natural, cultural and biodiversity features. The marine park contains many subtropical habitats, including protected, threatened, and endangered species such as the grey nurse shark and loggerhead turtles.

Julian Rocks is home to over 1000 marine species including sea turtles, humpback whales, dolphins, rays, sharks, marine invertebrates, corals, over 500 different species of fish, and an endless list of diverse marine life. The dive sites range from 6-24m in depth, providing an impressive experience for all levels of divers.

Arts & Music in Byron CBD

Culture, cafes, restaurants, bars, music, art – Byron has it in abundance. In fact, it has so much that it spills out onto the streets. You can hardly walk anywhere through town without finding an impromptu busker or secret gig springing up somewhere down a back alley. If it’s food you’re looking for, you name it, Byron has it. Plus, it’s all backed up by incredible beers, amazing cocktails, and bands that quite simply blow you away. Wake up in the morning, smell the freshly roasted coffee, jump in the surf, and get ready to do it all over again.

Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads

Some people tend to think Byron Bay is becoming a bit like the Northern Beaches of Sydney and is missing its “old image”. While it is true that Byron is constantly evolving, there are some areas not too far from the town of stars which retain that sense of timelessness that the Northern Rivers is known for. We are of course speaking of Mullumbimby, the biggest smallest town in the world, and Brunswick Heads, home of the Brunswick River and its famous drum circles.

Neigbouring each other just across from the M1 highway, these towns offer great openings to the hinterlands of the area where lush nature, waterfalls, rewarding hikes, and plenty of spiritual culture is hiding.

We definitely recommend taking a relaxing Sunday off to venture out to these two classic towns, escaping the bustling tourism of Byron Bay. Take a stroll through Mullumbimby’s main street full of rare vintage finds then hop over to Brunswick River in the later afternoon for the drum circle and dance party in the oceanside park, followed by world class bands taking up the stage at Hotel Brunswick. Prepare yourself for a mean Sunday session with the locals to finish your week off right.

Lennox Head

Surfers know Lennox Head for its internationally famous right hand point break, the hang-gliders love the place for the sensational views when they take off from Pat Moreton Lookout, and everyone knows just how special the healing qualities are of the tea tree freshwater lake at Lake Ainsworth. If you’re a fishing enthusiast, you can definitely add this to the list as well, and you’ll hear from many Bron locals who often find Lennox a quieter seaside place than their own bustling town for a good meal or coffee, as it’s just a 15 minute drive south.

Lennox Head has a great coastal village atmosphere, with a main street full of boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and a long strip of park adjoining the beach opposite, it’s the perfect place for kicking back under the tall pandanus palms. In the evening, definitely get down to Shorty’s for live music and DJs and meet some of the local legends that thrive in Lennox Head.

This time of year brings backpackers and travellers in from all corners of the world with lots of social activities and parties to enhance your experience!

How long should I spend in Byron Bay?

Though Byron Bay is a smaller destination to visit, there is plenty of things to do in and around the area, so we definitely recommend a solid two weeks to see and do as much as you can. Be careful though, Byron is known as a bubble so it is quite easy to get stuck! That’s not necessarily a bad thing though,

How far in advance should I book my accommodation in Byron Bay?

We recommend booking in advance with Byron as soon as you have the idea of visiting in your head. This spot is one of the hottest towns to visit and for good reason. Most accommodation is hard to find and is booked out for the entire Summer usually, so it would be good to get your foot in the door early.
