Darwin is one of the most popular stop offs in the Northern Territory. Famous for its crocodiles, immense Indigenous cultural hubs, and amazing National Parks, it’s an incredible part of Australia to explore. This Darwin & NT starter package is the perfect introduction to the wonderful world of the Northern Territory. We recommend combining this with one of our multi-day tours such as our Kakadu to Litchfield 4wd Camping Tour
Backpacking in Darwin and the Northern Territory is one of the most special experiences you can have while visiting down under. This is where the parties are wild, the Outback is omnipresent, and the whole state is quite free and open minded. Very few places offer such a visceral, raw, and uncut Australian experience as up north in these true blue Outback areas. You should be ready for some experiences and memories to be made, that’s for sure, so pack your smiles, laughs, sunscreen, sense of adventure, and willingness to let go and just say yes!
We’ve put together some hot tips and experiences for you to witness with your own eyes while you travel up to the Top End.
Today, you arrive in beautiful Darwin, a city known for its laid back culture and its access to some of Australia’s most rugged and stunning landscapes. First, spend some time exploring the city, wander the streets, grab a coffee, and settle in like a local. When you’re ready, check in to your hostel and make some friends at the local bars.
Today you will get up early to head out to Litchfield National Park! You’ll be picked up from your accommodation in the custom fully air conditioned tour buses. Spend your day cruising overland around the national park exploring the best local swimming holes and some of the most pristine and awe inspiring waterfalls in Australia.
You’ll hop on board a jumping crocodile cruise, seeing the dinosaurs in their natural habitat. They are magnificent, and at times, curiously calm. That is until you dangle lunch in front of them, so remember to keep your arms inside the boat.
After a final stop to see the towering termite mounds, you will cruise back to Darwin for a meal and a few drinks.
For a bit of heart pumping adrenaline today, you visit Crocosaurus Cove, where you get up close and personal with nature’s ultimate predators. As an optional extra, you can even get in the water with them for that true thrill seeking experience. Consider finishing the day checking out the Mindil Night Markets, where you can even munch down on a crocodile burger.
Enjoy the last day in Darwin with a relaxed breakfast or pick up a line and do some fishing. Today is yours to spend however you like and also your last day at the hostel.

You don’t necessarily need a 4WD, but it will open the doors of opportunity widely for you, so we definitely say it’s a not a bad idea, mate!
Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks feature many sealed roads. Many of NT’s most stunning sites, and a few more of its more direct routes, are 4WD access only.
Yes of course. If some of these places we suggested don’t completely blow you away, we definitely recommend trying out some more options and get lost in Darwin’s vast wilderness. We offer tours and activities to Kakadu, Arnhem land and Katherine Gorge. Make an enquiry and we can help you find the best option.
Only swim where there are designated safe swimming signs. It should be assumed that any water body in the saltwater crocodile’s natural range in the NT is unsafe to swim, unless signposted otherwise.
Most fatal crocodile attacks in the NT in the past 20 years have occurred when people have entered the water outside of designated swimming areas.
In the northern parts of Australia, there are two seasons, similar to SE Asia. The wet season (October to April, where you’ll encounter intense humidity, thunderstorms, and flooding in certain areas) and the dry season (May through September, when rain doesn’t fall as often).
Northern Territory is definitely the zone of the Outback, so it can be a bit sketchy at times, we recommend experienced travellers with good mechanical knowledge to take on the outback or try to travel in a convoy where possible. If you are travelling solo or wish to take the hassle out of travelling then ask us about our guided safari’s.
