Get ready for the road trip of a lifetime. This evening you’ll meet up with your roady buddies for a meet and greet dinner and drinks at Gilligans hostel in Cairns on us! Get to know your mates and start planning your epic adventure. We recommend downloading the WikiCamps Australia app to plan your camping stays.

Meals included: Dinner
Overnight: Gilligan’s Hostel | Cairns (optional extra)

Day 1: Start of Road Trip

Today is the day! The start of an epic Travel Buddies Roady adventure. Pick up your campers from Jucy depot in Cairns and familiarise yourself with your new homes for the next two weeks. Get the tunes pumping, and start your journey.

First stop we recommend is the Atherton Tablelands. Just over an hour south of Cairns, here you can enjoy a full day of waterfall hopping surrounded by stunning scenery and winding roads. Some of the hotspots are Babinda Boulders, Milla Milla Falls, Nandroya Falls, Josephine Falls, and Lake Eacham.

Overnight: Atherton Tablelands (recommended)

Day 2: Drive to Airlie Beach

You have a few days now to start making your way down to Airlie Beach for your first scheduled trip to the Whitsundays. Between Atherton Tablelands and Airlie Beach there are so many beautiful and exciting stops to explore.

Today we recommend travelling through Mission Beach, with beautiful beaches and scenic rainforest roads. Be sure to keep your eye out for a cassowary! Then keep travelling south along a beautiful rural coastal road towards Townsville. Maybe stop off for lunch at Hinchinbrook lookout and enjoy a quick walk to see the towering mountains of the island across the river.

Travel Buddies Roady Hot tip: Townsville council runs a handful of stunning free campsites along the coast which you can find on Wiki Camps. Just be sure to book your spot online before arriving.

Overnight: Townsville (recommended)

Day 3: Drive to Airlie Beach

Today, why not hop on a quick 25 minute ferry over to Magnetic Island? Here you can explore secluded beaches and awesome hikes to where old forts still stand with stunning views of the island below. Keep an eye out for Koala’s in the trees around you, the island is famous for them. The ferries run all day, which means you can spend the whole day exploring the gorgeous island and still get back to your campers in time for a beautiful evening under the stars.

Overnight: Saunders Beach (recommended)

Day 4: Drive to Airlie Beach

Crank the tunes and play some car games as you make your way to Airlie Beach today. Maybe stop off at Bowen for lunch, and get a quick pic with the giant mango. Be sure to arrive at Airlie Beach with enough time to explore the lively town. Chill out at the lagoon and enjoy one of the many backpacker bars. You have a night of camping sorted at the central Nomads Hostel, with an awesome social vibe. Pack an overnight bag with your swimmers and drink of choice, because tomorrow you’re off to the Whitsunday Islands!

Overnight: Nomads Airlie Beach Camping (included)

Day 5: Whitsundays Sail Trip

Today you’re heading out to the glorious Whitsundays! You can leave your camper safely at Nomads hostel. Meet your crew at Coral Sea Marina, and depart for the Whitsundays. After a couple hours sailing, your first spot will be the iconic Whitehaven beach where you’ll have a few hours to explore and relax. Trek to Hill Inlet lookout for those epic views of the swirling white sands before spending time relaxing on the pristine beach. Tonight you’ll sleep on the boat enjoying beers over a beautiful sunset, delicious dinner, and some games with your tour group and crew.

Day 6: Whitsundays Sail Trip

You’ll have the full day just to explore the epic Whitsunday Islands. Bush walk to Tongue Point for breathtaking views of the island below. Snorkel at 3 different spots over the 2 days to see some vibrant coral and awesome marine life. See if you can spot turtles, reef sharks, manta rays, and a flurry of colourful fish. Get hands on and help the crew out with sailing. Tonight you’ll camp at a beautiful and secluded spot on an island, watch the twinkling stars above over a campfire and fresh dinner with some more drinks and games.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Whitsundays Camping (included)

Day 7: Drive to Rainbow Beach

After breakfast and a refreshing swim, say goodbye to the Whitsundays this morning as you sail back to Airlie Beach. You’ll be arriving back to the mainland around 10:30 am, depending on the tide, so still plenty of time to explore new places today. We recommend heading directly to Eungella National Park to seek out hidden gems. Visit Finch Hatton Gorge and trek to the secret waterfall where you can take a refreshing dip. Hike through lush rainforest to the peak of Eungella where, if you’re lucky, you can spot the elusive Platypus in the creeks. Then tonight we recommend camping at Cape Hillsborough National Park, so you can wake up to an epic sunrise on the beach.

Meals included: Breakfast
Overnight: Cape Hillsborough National Park (recommended)

Day 8: Drive to Rainbow Beach

One of the best sunrise experiences on the East Coast. Cape Hillsborough is famous for its many kangaroos that roam the shores at sunrise. Watch the gorgeous colours play over the water and say hello to the friendly kangaroos and wallabies. A perfect spot for breakfast before carrying on your way down the coast. Todays a bit of a long one, so crank the tunes and play another round of ‘Who am I’ before settling somewhere like Emu Park for the night.

Overnight: Emu Park (recommended)

Day 9: Drive to Rainbow Beach

Did you know that Agnes Water is the most northern point along the East Coast you can surf? Make the most of it today, drive down to Agnes Water and hire a board or hop on a surf lesson to surf the beautiful waves at the main beach – ideal for beginners or advanced. Explore the laid back town of 1770 and enjoy beach vibes and beautiful surroundings.

Overnight: Agnes Water (recommended)

Day 10: Drive to Rainbow Beach

It’s not far to Rainbow beach now, so why not stop off at the Bundaberg Turtle Sanctuary to treat yourselves today. Learn all about these extraordinary animals and the conservation efforts and research programs that are protecting them. Finally, make the drive to Rainbow Beach, where you have a camping spot at Freedom Hostel waiting for you. Spend sunset at the Carlo Sandblow for an epic view and enjoy a drink or two at Freedom’s social bar. Get ready for another guided tour in the morning, a 4WD Tag Along adventure to the stunning island of K’gari.

Overnight: Freedom Hostel Camping (included)

Day 11: K'gari

Start bright and early with your 7am safety briefing at Freedom Hostel in Rainbow Beach. Meet your fellow travellers who will be joining you on this epic adventure. Depart Rainbow Beach and head over to the world’s largest sand island! Once you are on the island the real adventure begins. Drive along 75 mile beach, blast the tunes, and enjoy the wonderful scenery. Stop for a quick lunch before heading to one of the best spots on the island – Lake Mckenzie! Swim in the amazingly blue water and relax on the white sands. Head out for another drive towards your Dingo safe campsite before dark – just in time for a fun and relaxing evening of dinner and drinks.

Meals included: Lunch, Dinner

Day 12: K'gari

Today begins with a quick breakfast before heading out to make the most of your day on the island. Your first stop will be Eli Creek, the natural lazy river. Take a few awesome pictures as you learn a bit about the history of this famous icon of the island. Make sure to watch for Dingoes as you drive! Continue on to Indian Head, K’Gari’s highest point, where you may be lucky enough to spot sharks, whales, or stingrays in the waters below. Stop for lunch before making your way to the scenic Champagne pools. Enjoy the clear rock pools, crashing waves, and beautiful views. Final drive of the day back to camp for another evening of delicious food and a fun night ahead.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 13: Rainbow Beach and Noosa

After breakfast, packing up, and saying farewell to your camp, enjoy another day of driving along the epic 75 mile beach. Today, enjoy a 2km hike through stunning forest as you make your way to Lake Wabby. A lusciously green lake in the middle of a sandblow, the lake’s waters will leave your skin and hair feeling super smooth. Relax by the lake as you take in the beautiful sounds and sights of nature. Finally, it’s time to make your way back to the mainland. Enjoy the final drive along 75 Mile Beach before grabbing the barge back to Rainbow Beach, where you will arrive back at the hostel between 3 and 4pm.

Once you’re back on the mainland, pick up your campers again and we recommend driving the hour and a half down to Noosa to spend the evening, where social bars and beautiful beaches await.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
Overnight: Noosa (recommended)

Day 14: End of Epic Road Trip

The final day of your Travel Buddies Roady trip has come – but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun today. Spend the morning in the beautiful town of Noosa. Trek along the Noosa headlands and find the hidden fairy pools for a dip with a gorgeous view of the ocean. Or maybe join an Everglades cruise and canoe tour, for a serene kayak through stunning waterways and refreshing tea tree lakes. After an epic 2 weeks on the road, it’s time to make your way back to Brisbane via the Sunshine Coast to drop off your camper.
