Overall, Thailand is one of the safest countries to travel in South East Asia, especially with so many backpacker friendly routes and destinations. Of course, we always recommend exercising a good degree of caution wherever you go. Travelling as part of a group can almost guarantee you a danger free, adventure only trip.
