5 Day Northern Territory Highlights Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Darwin – Arnhem Land

Welcome to Darwin, the tropical heart of the Northern Territory. The adventure begins early as we depart at 6:30 am, heading east along the Arnhem Highway toward Corroboree Billabong on the Mary River. Here, we’ll cruise through rich wetlands teeming with birdlife and keep a sharp eye out for the legendary saltwater crocodiles that inhabit the area.

After lunch, we continue to the edge of Kakadu and Arnhem Land at Cahill’s Crossing, where our 4WD takes us across the crocodile-inhabited East Alligator River. Enter Arnhem Land, a place of deep cultural significance. Guided by a local Bininj guide, you’ll explore restricted rock art and ceremonial sites that have been visited for thousands of years by First Nations ancestors. This is a rare and meaningful opportunity to connect with one of the world’s oldest living cultures.

We finish the day with a return to Kakadu National Park for our overnight stay.

Accommodation: Powered eco tent camps with shared facilities (1 night)
Included Activities: Corroboree Billabong Cruise, Arnhem Land rock art and cultural experience
Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner
Driving Time: Approximately 6 hours (350 km)

Day 2: Kakadu National Park

After an early breakfast, we head to one of Kakadu’s most iconic natural wonders, Jim Jim Falls. This experience includes a rewarding but challenging hike through lush monsoon forest and over large boulders. At the end of the trail, cool off with a swim in the crystal-clear plunge pool beneath the towering cliffs of the falls.

Following lunch, we visit Anbangbang, a culturally rich site known for its ancient Aboriginal rock art. Once part of Warramal Country, this site is now cared for by the neighbouring Mirarr and Djok communities, as there are no surviving Warramal people. It’s a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the area’s deep cultural heritage.

Later in the afternoon, you may choose to take a scenic flight over Kakadu, offering a stunning aerial view of its vast floodplains, escarpments, and winding rivers.

Accommodation: Powered eco tent camps with shared facilities (1 night)

Day 3: Kakadu National Park

After breakfast, we make our way to either Gunlom Falls or Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) for another refreshing swim in one of Kakadu’s pristine natural waterholes. At Maguk, water cascades down rugged gorge walls into a deep, clear plunge pool surrounded by tropical greenery. Alternatively, a steep but rewarding climb to Gunlom Falls offers sweeping views over the park and access to a serene upper pool shaded by gum trees. Both options provide a peaceful and picturesque way to spend the morning.

After some time to relax, we hit the road once again. We’ll stop for lunch in the historic gold-mining town of Pine Creek, then continue south for approximately three hours to our private campsite near Nitmiluk National Park. After settling in, enjoy dinner with the group and unwind beneath the stars.

You can choose to discover the gorge on foot or take an optional scenic cruise for a unique perspective of the towering cliffs and winding river. Please note that optional activities are seasonal and at your own expense.

In the afternoon, we visit Edith Falls, a hidden oasis known for its refreshing rock pools framed by smooth, bronze boulders. After a swim, we continue on to our final campsite near Litchfield National Park, where a hearty dinner will be waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fit will I need to be?

Moderate fitness is required. Guests will do short hikes and swims (up to 4 km per day), sometimes over rocky or uneven terrain.

Will I have to help on tour?

Yes – while your guide will take care of most of the meals, you’ll have the chance to get involved with simple daily tasks like setting up camp, meal prep, and tidying up. It’s all part of the shared experience, and your help is always appreciated. Many travelers say that pitching in helps them feel more connected and less like a tourist – it’s all part of the adventure!

Do I need to bring my own camping equipment?

All the necessary equipment will be supplied to make your camping experience as comfortable as possible. Provided will be swags, tents, camp chairs, cooking equipment, tables, lamps/lights, torches and eskies. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag or hire one.

What is the group size of this tour?

This is a small group tour with a maximum of  15 people.

What should I wear on tour?

Daytime temperatures and humidity can be extreme from October to March, with temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius. Nighttime temperatures can also be high at this time of year.rnrnWe recommend bringing loose, cool cotton clothing to protect yourself from the harsh sun. A sun hat, sunscreen, swimwear, towel, sturdy walking shoes and sunglasses are necessary. Nighttime temperatures between June and August can get quite cold so we also recommend bringing a jacket.

Can you cater for my dietary requirements?

Yes, passengers with special meal requirements or food allergies MUST ensure they inform us at least 72 hours prior to the trip commencing. Food for the trip is purchased before commencement and special requirements cannot be catered for after departing. Due to the remote nature of our tours, food is basic but plentiful. We can cater for the following dietary requirements:

  • No Pork
  • No Dairy
  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Gluten Free (& Coeliac)

How fit do I need to be?

Kakadu, Arnhemland and Litchfield are rough and rugged stone bush country. In many places listed in the itinerary, there are cleared walking tracks but not boardwalks or handrails. Some walks are over slippery and uneven ground, and caution is advised when walking over these surfaces. A reasonable level of fitness u0026amp; stable footing is required for most locations in these itineraries and to make the most of the experience. Territory Expeditions has designed these tours for the fit and active.rnrnTo get the most out of this trip, you need to be prepared for walks of between 3 and 8 km on some days. This may be on rough ground, and perhaps your feet will get wet in rivers and creeks. From October to March, you will experience temperatures of over 35 degrees Celsius (and sometimes well into the 40s), so be prepared to endure extra physical stress due to the heat at these times, especially while on walks.rnrnThese extreme outside temperatures can also stress the air-conditioning units within the vehicles, making travelling uncomfortable. Your tour guide will provide regular breaks and information to help you stay well-hydrated.

What are the sleeping conditions like?

You’ll spend three nights in a twin-share permanent eco tent, equipped with a bed, mattress, pillow, and bottom sheet for a comfortable night’s rest. Each campsite also features hot showers, toilets just a short walk away, and a swimming pool for a refreshing dip.Set on raised wooden platforms and made from durable canvas, these semi-permanent tents are designed for a low-impact, sustainable stay in nature. Mesh windows and roll-up sides let in the breeze, keeping your tent cool and airy.

Will there be power for charging devices?

Our camps offer limited access to power for charging devices, available in the shared kitchen, bathroom and dining areas. We recommend bringing a power bank to stay topped up between stops.

What sort of vehicles will I be travelling in?

You will be travelling in a vehicle specifically designed and built for Australian outback conditions. All vehicles are 4WD, air-conditioned for your comfort, and have iPhone connections and large panoramic windows for uninterrupted sightseeing.

What about luggage limits?

Pack only your bare essentials. Due to limited space and strict road laws limiting vehicle gross weight, you are required to limit your luggage to one small to medium-sized soft bag or backpack (max 10 kg) and a small daypack, which can be carried inside the vehicle. Extra luggage can usually be stored at your hotel.

Will I have phone reception while on tour?

Mobile phone reception is available around all major service centres within Kakadu, Litchfield, Arnhemland, and Mardugal campground. Every vehicle has a Satellite phone for emergencies.rnrnThe most important thing to remember is that you’re on holiday, and that’s a great reason not to have a phone.

Do I need Travel Insurance?

We highly recommend having travel insurance.
