Description

Welcome to Brisbane, a cosmopolitan hub for arts, culture and dining, with a heavy laid-back charm. With its mix of local markets, artificial beach, and fun nightlife, it’s a great base for a few days before heading north to Noosa and Fraser Island or South towards the beach vibes of Surfers Paradise and Byron Bay.

To help you make the most of your time in Brisbane, we’ve put together our Brisbane Starter Package – which combines our favourite tours and accommodation to help you make the most of your time in the Queensland capital. We recommend this package for anyone either starting in Brisbane or as an add on to any existing East Coast trip.

Itinerary

Day 1: Brisbane City

On arrival to Brisbane, there is so much to see. First, fuel up for the day at one of many cafes and eateries. A must visit is Three Monkeys Cafe in West End, frequented by performing arts royalty during the shows held at The Queensland Performing Arts Centre. It’s full of character, charm, and serves one hell of a chai, and their sweets cabinet will have you salivating.

After that, meander down Fish Lane in South Brisbane, and gaze at some of the most magnificent street art around. A walk through the extremely popular Southbank precinct will see you smack bang in the middle of one of the most plentiful lifestyle dining areas in Brisbane. After a bite to eat, wander over to The Gallery Of Modern Art at the eastern end of Southbank, and check out one of the many exciting exhibitions, often very interactive, that’s on offer. Head over and check into Nomads Central before catching a bus up to Mt. Cootha Lookout to spend some time taking in the view of the stunning city lights.

Day 2: Moreton Island Day Trip

Today, you get to take a trip on the adventure packed Moreton Island Wrecks Adventure Tour, a fantastic day out. You will head over on the resort’s private catamaran ferry, and from there, you get to choose up to three unique adventures for your Moreton Island Day Trip. Whether you want to be segwaying along white sandy beaches, snorkeling in and out of the Tangalooma Wrecks or Banana Boating along the crystal blue waters, Moreton Island has plenty to offer.

The island is the third largest sand island in the world and is a Brisbane bucket list spot. After returning from the island, don’t forget to share a rendez-vous with your mates at the 4 Pines Bar in the city, followed by a wild night out in the Down Under Bar.

Day 3: Australia Zoo

Today is the day you visit Australia Zoo, renowned home of the world famous Crocodile Hunter. See the crocodile show at midday and spend the rest of the day monkeying around the primate exhibit, slithering through the reptile enclosures or getting up high with a giraffe. No matter how you go about it, you will be left with a smile. That leads to your last night at Nomads Central, where you can head out for a meal in the CBD, and see the Storey Bridge lights as you wander along the river reflecting on your last few days.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Brisbane?

To be in the thick of it all, we recommend Nomads Backpackers, located across the road from Central Station, and walking distance from Queen Street Mall and South Bank.

If you feel like venturing out, the night hub of Caxton Street is close by, where bars have been visited by the lifestyles of the rich & famous, sporting greats, and headlining musicians.

What's the best area to dine out in Brisbane?

There are plenty of great options across the city, but we recommend West End. It’s jam packed with cultural food from around the world, and has a emphasis on Asian cuisine. Here, you’ll be able to find quality meals for a backpacker’s budget for as low as 14$AUD.

Are there some cool things to do outside of town?

Brisbane is literally the epicentre for lots to do along the East Coast – perfect driving distance from the Gold Coast to the south, the Sunshine Coast to your north, and plenty of wonderful nature spots to the west. Your hostel will most likely be running tours to both coasts, otherwise you can catch a bus or train if you don’t have your own transportation.

You can even take ferries over to North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Island for a day to experience some island life.

How is the nightlife in Brisbane?

There is absolutely no shortage of good bars, pubs, and nightclubs in Brisbane for all budgets. This city has you covered whether you’re looking for loud and live tunes or after a quiet rooftop bar to soak in the beautiful cityscapes at night.

Fortitude Valley is Brisbane’s main nightclub district with a mix of clubs, pubs, and laid-back bars.

Is it easy to find employment in Brisbane?

Most cities in Australia are easy to find employment across a range of industries. In Brisbane, there’s no shortage of retail, hospitality, and office tempo jobs suited to the backpacker market. If you have some trade experience, you should look into obtaining a White Card, and you’ll be able to work in trade jobs, such as construction.
