One of the best places in the world to encounter dolphins in the wild! Encounter Kaikoura operates on the dolphins’ terms. You can swim with the dolphins in their natural environment or watch their acrobatic displays form the comfort of the boat.
There is a limit of just 16 swimmers on each vessel with plenty of additional space for watching. Encounter Kaikoura has three dolphin swimming vessels and is able to operate up to three tours per day. Please book your dolphin swim seats as soon as you can.
Dolphin Encounter tours are approximately three and a half hours in duration from check in time to the return time at the operating base.
Check in at designated time and meet the kaikoura dolphin encounter team
Get kitted up with gear provided, wetsuits, and snorkel equipment
Board the Encounter Kaikoura vessel
Jump in and swim with the dolphins (normally 20-40 mins)
Have a warm shower back on the vessel
Head back to base
Arrive at your designated meeting point early to meet your Dolphin Encounter team.

There is definitely no wrong way. We recommend either taking a WHIMIT or Hop on Hop off bus pass such as Greyhound or renting a campervan with some mates and hitting the open road. If you feel like getting pretty adventurous and want to get amongst the true Australian terrain, a 4WD may be better suited for you. Enquire now and we can help you find the most suitable transport option.
