Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa to enter Japan?

In most cases, a visa is not required, as many travellers can obtain a visa on arrival. However, visa requirements depend on citizenship, as well as the length and purpose of the visit. It is always recommended to check the latest visa guidelines before travelling.

What is the currency used in Japan?

Japan’s official currency is the Japanese Yen (¥), which can be used for everything from public transport to authentic local cuisine.

How do I get to the starting point?

Tokyo has two major international airports – Narita and Haneda. Taxis are available but tend to be expensive. The most convenient option is taking a train, with tickets available for purchase at the airport. The journey to the hotel takes approximately 1-2 hours.

What type of luggage can I bring?

Each traveller is allowed one bag or suitcase up to 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”), with a maximum weight of 20kg (44lbs), plus one carry-on bag suitable for flights.

During the trip, certain journeys are taken via Shinkansen (bullet train), where main luggage cannot be carried due to space restrictions. Instead, luggage is forwarded to the next hotel via truck.

For overnight stays in Hiroshima and Mt Koya, an overnight bag will be necessary as main luggage will not be accessible. The Trip Manager will provide guidance on what to pack for these nights.

Can bullet train tickets be used at a later date?

All bullet train tickets issued during the trip are one-use-only and cannot be used once the trip has finished.

Is a Japan Rail (JR) Pass provided?

A Japan Rail Pass is not included, as all necessary transport is already covered during the trip. However, anyone interested in purchasing one for post-trip travel can ask the Trip Manager for guidance on where to buy it.

Is Street Kart or Mario Kart available as an optional activity?

At this time, Street Kart or Mario Kart is not included in any Contiki trips. However, availability might change in the future!

What’s included in this tour?

Included in the cost are essential travel elements such as accommodation, transport, and meals (breakfast is typically offered daily, along with selected authentic meals). Included Experiences feature must-see attractions and activities. You’ll also benefit from expert Contiki staff support throughout the trip. Special requests, such as birthdays or proposals, can often be accommodated with prior communication.

What’s not included?

Contiki trips offer a great degree of flexibility so certain elements are not included in the base price. Flights to and from the trip’s starting and ending points must be arranged separately. Some experiences and activities require additional costs and are available as Free Time Add-Ons. Meals outside of included options and travel insurance are also not covered.

How many other travellers are on each trip?

Group sizes stay fairly small on this trip – as low as 12 or up to 30 travellers max.

Detour trips offer a different type of experience and max out at 16 people led by a local host.

What is the role of the Trip Manager?

The Trip Manager is responsible for organising the trip and providing essential information, fun facts, and local food recommendations. They ensure the trip runs smoothly, addressing any concerns or issues. The Trip Manager also offers cultural and historical insights, delivering informal talks when relevant.
