Japan Tokyo to Kyoto Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive & Meet the Group

Welcome to Tokyo! Today, take your time to greet your tour group and settle into your hostel accommodation. Relax or spend the evening exploring some of the colourful streets and bars of Tokyo.

Day 2: Explore Tokyo Nightlife

First up today is visiting the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, the Senso-ji Temple, before heading over to the Meiji Shrine. Next, explore vibrant Harajuku and the well-known Shibuya Crossing, which is the busiest intersection in the world! Enjoy a few drinks with your group in some of Shinjuku’s quirky eateries and tiny bars and experience a bit of Tokyo’s nightlife.

Day 3: Sushi Class & The Electric City

Enjoy a relaxing morning before taking up the art of sushi rolling, learning from an incredible sushi master. Explore more of what Tokyo has to offer followed by a visit to Akihabara, known as the Electric City. Famous for its crazy arcades, vibrant shops, maid cafes, and futuristic vibes, you could easily spend hours getting sucked into the epic energy here.

Day 4: Bullet Train to Nagano

Today you’ll be taking the famous 200mph Bullet Train from futuristic Tokyo to the more traditional city of Nagano. Take part in the ancient art of origami and relax in the warm waters of an Onsen, a serene natural spa that is the result of a volcanic hot spring. Tonight, live like a true local as you spend the night in a traditional Japanese Ryokan, sleeping on tatami mats and comfy futon bedding.

Day 5: Explore Nagano

Dive further into Japanese cooking this morning by learning how to roll your own delicious soba noodles. After that, head into the mountains in hopes of spotting the well-known snow monkeys, also called Japanese Macaques, that inhabit the area. In the summer, these cheeky animals play among the trees, and in the winter, they stay warm by taking a dip in the natural hot springs. Then, stroll around Shiga Kogen National Park’s stunning lakes and forests while taking in the crisp mountain air (summer tours only).

Day 6: Nagano to Hakone

It’s back on the Bullet Train this morning, this time heading to Hakone. Here, you’ll get to experience natural hot springs in abundance and breathtaking surroundings, and most iconic of all, incredible views of the snow capped Mount Fuji. Take in the beautiful nature and check into your cosy hostel, equipped with its own Onsen to relax.

Day 7: Hakone to Osaka

Travelling by pirate ship and a cable car, spend the morning discovering the breathtaking Hakone area. On a clear day, the views of Mount Fuji are absolutely unrivalled, and the river views are unforgettable. Then, head to Osaka to enjoy a BBQ dinner and an epic night out, Osaka-style. Expect rice wine and karaoke songs all evening long!

Day 8: Osaka Castle

Enjoy a leisurely morning and explore some of Osaka’s fantastic shopping, before visiting the amazing Osaka Castle. Built over 400 years ago, this castle comes with a chance to learn about Japan’s incredible history and the legendary stories of the Samurai. Then, visit the canal district of Dotonbori and enjoy some of the best food in the country.

Day 9: Koyasan Buddhist Temple Stay

Today, return to the mountains for an incredible once in a lifetime experience – an overnight stay in a 1000 year old Buddhist Temple in the fascinating town of Koyasan. Learn meditation from the monks of the temple and enjoy some of their traditional cuisine. Then enjoy an exciting night time stroll through the largest cemetery in Japan.

Day 10: Koyasan to Kyoto

Rise early this morning to witness the Buddhist monks perform their morning prayer and fire ceremony, which is truly incredible to experience. Enjoy a traditional breakfast before heading to Kyoto, the historic capital of Japan. Take a tour of Gion and learn more about the fascinating history and the intriguing Geishas of the district.

Day 11: Bamboo Forest & The Golden Pavilion

Today is the perfect day to get all your instagram pictures! First up is the famous Bamboo Forest of Arashiyama, where you’ll enjoy a beautiful stroll surrounded by towering green bamboo. Then, head to the Golden Pavilion for a shot of the gorgeous temple and to explore the gardens. Enjoy a free night exploring the area with plenty of awesome sushi restaurants, bars, and arcades to occupy your evening.

Day 12: Fushimi-Inari & Samurai Experience

Fushimi-Inari’s endless Torii gates are waiting for you today! Take a tour of one of the most famous shrines in Japan while strolling through the ancient mountain’s winding trails. This afternoon, you’ll be taught by a dedicated Samurai master the wonderful art of the sword. Savour the grace of these weapons as you cut through rolled bamboo, channelling your inner warrior. Celebrate your final meal and drink with your group this evening as you bid farewell to Japan and revel in your incredible trip.

Day 13: Check Out & Onward Travel

Do I need to reconfirm my bookings?

All bookings must be reconfirmed 48 hours in advance by contacting your tour provider directly using the contact information listed on your tour voucher.

What should I do if my trip is cancelled due to bad weather?

You may either re-schedule directly with the supplier or you can email our support team on [email protected] and include your voucher number, name of product you booked, planned departure date and your contact details. Once you’ve emailed us, you can drop us a line at +61 2 5633 1149.

Do you book tours with flexible dates? If so, how long are they valid for?

Yes, we do have open dated/flexible tickets available. Most tour vouchers are valid for 12 months from date of purchase, however please be aware that you may be subject to supplier price fluctuations. All ticket validity is specified on the tour voucher. If you are unsure of the validity of your voucher, just ask one of our wonderful staff.

What do I do if I need help with an existing booking?

Some tours have extra costs and you should be aware that there may be added expenses. These expenses will differ for each service provider, but some of the more usual extras are: EMC tax, stinger suit hire, luggage storage, sleeping bag hire, linen hire, national park fee, food, insurance, accommodation, equipment hire, petrol levy, etc. We will alert you to extra costs to the extent reasonably practicable. However, you must also check with each individual service provider when you re-confirm your booking.

Do I need travel insurance?

We endorse the recommendation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that all travellers take out travel insurance. If you already have travel insurance, please understand that it is your responsibility to ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all of the adventure style travel you have booked with us.

Do you offer payment plans?

Absolutely, we understand that paying off a big trip in one go isn’t always that easy. We offer flexible payment plans to suit all types of travellers with zero interest or fee’s (minimum $100AUD deposit required).

How do I know if my trip is BYO?

Most tour vouchers will specify if your trip is BYO however we recommend asking your tour provider if your trip is BYO when you reconfirm your booking 48 hours prior to departure.
