Kakadu, Katherine, and Litchfield Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Darwin to Kakadu

We start early, leaving Darwin at 6:30 am and heading east along the Arnhem Highway, passing expansive floodplains. After crossing the Adelaide River, we arrive at the Mary River and Corroboree Billabong, home to the world’s highest concentration of saltwater crocodiles. On an hour-long cruise, your guide will help you spot these ‘salties’ in their natural habitat and highlight the incredible variety of birdlife thriving in the wetlands.

Next, we journey into Kakadu National Park, stopping at Cahill’s Crossing by the East Alligator River for a hearty lunch. Then we visit Ubirr, famous for some of Northern Australia’s finest Aboriginal rock art. A short climb leads to stunning panoramic views of the Nardab Floodplains, East Alligator River, and the escarpments of Arnhem Land.

We’ll spend the night in our exclusive camp in Jabiru, Kakadu’s main township.

Relax in the crystal-clear water, surrounded by ancient pandanus palms and timeless cliff walls – a truly special and untouched place.

Next, we hop back into our 4WD and continue to Bukbukluk Lookout, where a short walk through woodlands rewards us with beautiful views. This afternoon, we visit Ikoymarrwa (Moline Rockhole), a protected site featuring another peaceful and impressive waterhole requiring special permits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Kakadu from Darwin?

To drive into Kakadu from Darwin takes approximately 3 hours. Most sites throughout Kakadu are quite spread out so a couple of hours driving here and there should be expected.

Do I need to bring my own camping equipment?

All the necessary equipment will be supplied to make your camping experience as comfortable as possible. Provided will be swags, tents, camp chairs, cooking equipment, tables, lamps/lights, torches and eskies.

What is the group size of this tour?

This is a small group tour with a maximum of  16 people.

What should I wear on tour?

Daytime temperatures and humidity can be extreme from October to March, with temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius. Nighttime temperatures can also be high at this time of year.rnrnWe recommend bringing loose, cool cotton clothing to protect yourself from the harsh sun. A sun hat, sunscreen, swimwear, towel, sturdy walking shoes and sunglasses are necessary. Nighttime temperatures between June and August can get quite cold so we also recommend bringing a jacket.

Can you cater for my dietary requirements?

Yes, passengers with special meal requirements or food allergies MUST ensure they inform us at least 72 hours prior to the trip commencing. Food for the trip is purchased before commencement and special requirements cannot be catered for after departing. Due to the remote nature of our tours, food is basic but plentiful. We can cater for the following dietary requirements:

  • No Pork
  • No Dairy
  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Gluten Free (& Coeliac)

How fit do I need to be?

Kakadu, Arnhemland and Litchfield are rough and rugged stone bush country. In many places listed in the itinerary, there are cleared walking tracks but not boardwalks or handrails. Some walks are over slippery and uneven ground, and caution is advised when walking over these surfaces. A reasonable level of fitness u0026amp; stable footing is required for most locations in these itineraries and to make the most of the experience. Territory Expeditions has designed these tours for the fit and active.rnrnTo get the most out of this trip, you need to be prepared for walks of between 3 and 8 km on some days. This may be on rough ground, and perhaps your feet will get wet in rivers and creeks. From October to March, you will experience temperatures of over 35 degrees Celsius (and sometimes well into the 40s), so be prepared to endure extra physical stress due to the heat at these times, especially while on walks.rnrnThese extreme outside temperatures can also stress the air-conditioning units within the vehicles, making travelling uncomfortable. Your tour guide will provide regular breaks and information to help you stay well-hydrated.

What are the sleeping conditions like?

You’ll spend three nights in a twin-share permanent eco tent, equipped with a bed, mattress, pillow, and bottom sheet for a comfortable night’s rest. Each campsite also features hot showers, toilets just a short walk away, and a swimming pool for a refreshing dip.

Set on raised wooden platforms and made from durable canvas, these semi-permanent tents are designed for a low-impact, sustainable stay in nature. Mesh windows and roll-up sides let in the breeze, keeping your tent cool and airy.

Will there be power for charging devices?

Our camps offer limited access to power for charging devices, available in the shared kitchen, bathroom and dining areas. We recommend bringing a power bank to stay topped up between stops.

What sort of vehicles will I be travelling in?

You will be travelling in a vehicle specifically designed and built for Australian outback conditions. All vehicles are 4WD, air-conditioned for your comfort, and have iPhone connections and large panoramic windows for uninterrupted sightseeing.

What about luggage limits?

Pack only your bare essentials. Due to limited space and strict road laws limiting vehicle gross weight, you are required to limit your luggage to one small to medium-sized soft bag or backpack (max 10 kg) and a small daypack, which can be carried inside the vehicle. Extra luggage can usually be stored at your hotel.

Will I have phone reception while on tour?

Mobile phone reception is available around all major service centres within Kakadu, Litchfield, Arnhemland, and Mardugal campground. Every vehicle has a Satellite phone for emergencies.rnrnThe most important thing to remember is that you’re on holiday, and that’s a great reason not to have a phone.

Do I need Travel Insurance?

We highly recommend having travel insurance.
