Updated March 2026
Cairns is found in the heart of Tropical Far North Queensland and is one of the most visited backpacker hotspots Australia wide. Thanks to Cairns' location it has amazing weather and is super warm all year round, this makes it perfect for visiting any time. The city itself is a bustling hub where you can swim in the pristine lagoon, shop to your heart's content or eat at one of the many amazing restaurants. However, it’s what surrounds the city that gives travellers year in year out reasons to keep visiting Cairns.
Just a quick one-hour boat ride from the city, you'll find the famous Great Barrier Reef. It's Cairns' not-so-secret gem and a must-see for anyone who wants to explore the magic of the underwater world here. Cairns is also your gateway to lush tropical rainforests loaded with Aboriginal culture and unique wildlife. It's the real deal for those looking to experience the true Australia. Cairns is also the only spot in the world where two world heritage sites meet on Cape Tribulation: “where the reef meets the rainforest!” With so many incredible activities in Cairns, here are our top recommendations to help you add to that ever growing Australia bucket list:
Great Barrier Reef Tours
It goes without saying that a trip to the Great Barrier Reef is an absolute must, it is the reason that Cairns was created after all! However with so many different ways to see the reef some will be better suited than others, depending on your experience and what kind of traveller you are. Here’s some of our favourites:
1. Silverswift
This day trip to the reef is perfect for snorkelers or people wanting to give scuba diving a go. You'll explore coral wonders and marine magic as you visit three different outer reef sites at Flynn, Pellowe, Milln and/or Thetford Reefs. First time divers can take the plunge in complete confidence with an experienced dive instructor by your side. An introductory dive is a 10 metre fun dive where you do not need a qualification. This boat is very friendly on the old wallet, coming in much cheaper than lots of other reef options.
2. Pro Dive - Liveaboard / Open Water & Advanced Courses
Pro Dive is the leading operator in liveaboard and Padi courses in Cairns. They have an exclusive array of outer reef sites right next to the continental shelf. The rule of thumb is the nearer you get to the continental shelf the more beautiful the reef gets, the higher abundance of animals, and the fewer day trip boats you see. This experience is for those serious scuba divers out there. For those wanting to get their licence this is an amazing option as you get your qualification living on the reef.
The same goes for certified divers. Sure, you can hit the reef for a day, but it's a world apart from diving, dining, and dozing off on the reef for three days, with nothing in sight but the mesmerising reef and incredible wildlife.
3. GSL Reef & Port Douglas Scenic Flight
Want to see the best bits of Cairns from a truly unique perspective? GSL’s one hour flight includes a bird’s eye view of Green Island, the Great Barrier Reef, and North QLD coastline. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and the amazing contrast of colours is something that’s best experienced from the air. Fly overhead the tourist town of Port Douglas, and along the renowned North Queensland, granting views that are absolutely sensational.
4. Great Adventures Green Island
After exploring the Outer Reef from above and below, you definitely deserve a relaxing day on a stunning tropical island. Green Island is an emerald gem in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, surrounded by clear turquoise waters and thriving fringe reef. With this tour you can choose your own adventure! Snorkel among vibrant marine life, take a glass-bottom boat tour, or do both. Enjoy up to 7 hours exploring the island's beauty, from leisurely rainforest walks to relaxing by the island’s pool. The perfect place to kick back and relax and see the reef from another point of view.

Cairns is known as the adrenaline capital of Australia. For those daredevils out there, look no further than Cairns for your white knuckle activities that will certainly get your heart racing.
5. Skydive Cairns
Of all the activities in Cairns, this one may be the most exciting. It is an incredible place to throw yourself out of a plane at 15,000ft after all! With its tropical climate and the proximity to world heritage listed sites, it is one of the best places in Australia to skydive. Fall at 200 kilometres an hour whilst you overlook The Great Barrier Reef and rainforests - this has to be one of the most picturesque skydives around!
6. AJ Hackett Bungy
Cairns is the only location in the whole of Australia where you can try the most character testing of adrenaline activities, bungy jumping! The AJ Hackett lookout boasts the highest viewing platform in Cairns at 140 metres, offering spectacular views of surrounding rainforests, overlooking Cairns out towards the reef. This is an essential activity for those adrenaline junkies out there.
7. Raging Thunder White Water Rafting
Tully River, with its grade 3 and 4 rapids, is known as the best rafting river in Australia. This all-day eco-tour takes you through a World Heritage-listed rainforest, promising non-stop action and thrills. And with over 30 years of experience, the Raging Thunder crew ensures a safe but memorable adventure. Tackle scenic rapids and learn about the river's role in producing clean, green energy. We believe this one is definitely worth the adrenaline rush.
Rainforests & Waterfalls
Cairns is surrounded by an array of gorgeous ecosystems and hidden beauties that are very unique to Cairns’ tropical climate, including some absolutely stunning rainforests and waterfalls. The highlights of these for us would be Daintree National Park, which is home to the gorgeous Cape Tribulation; Kuranda; and The Atherton Tablelands. 10. Kuranda Scenic Railway & Skyrail with Transfers
Two of Tropical North Queensland's most iconic journeys, back to back. Glide above the World Heritage-listed rainforest on the Skyrail Cableway, stopping at Red Peak and Barron Falls for stunning views and ranger-guided walks. Then explore the quirky village of Kuranda before cruising back through rainforest, waterfalls, and gorges on the historic Scenic Railway. Transfers from Cairns included from $195pp - or upgrade to the Classic package for the full Rainforestation experience, Army Duck tour, Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience, and an Aussie BBQ lunch.
