Best Ways To Experience The Great Barrier Reef

By: Abbie Brooks August 1, 2022
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most popular destinations in Australia and experiencing it first should be on every backpackers bucket list. But with so many options to choose from, we know it can be a bit overwhelming trying to figure out the best Great Barrier Reef trip! So we’ve put together a quick breakdown of the range of Great Barrier Reef trips to help you decide which is best for you!
Snorkelling in Great Barrier Reef

Snorkel Trip

The easiest and cheapest option to experience the Great Barrier Reef has to be the range of snorkel day trips. From larger group boats through to smaller, more backpacker friendly boats, there’s a huge range to choose from.

Intro Dive Trip

If snorkelling won’t quite cut it, many dive boats also offer introductory scuba diving on their day trips too. This is the perfect way to experience the fun of scuba diving without having to do a full scuba dive course. You’ll be guided through the basic skills with your experienced instructor who will then show you around underwater, to a max depth of 12m. The bonus is that, if you do decide to get your PADI Open Water certification, your intro dive will also count towards it and the package will be discounted.

Overnight Liveaboard

If you’re really keen on your scuba diving and are already certified, an overnight dive liveaboard is the perfect way to enjoy maximum diving and make the most of what the reef has to offer. Taking in multiple dive sites means you’ll also see more parts of the reef too. If you’re looking at doing your open water course, it’s worth taking the chance to upgrade so your open water dives are part of a liveaboard – two bucket list items in one!

The Great Barrier Reef From The Air

For those who aren’t content with just sailing around on the Great Barrier Reef or snorkelling ,why not see it from another perspective and hop on a scenic flight, something which can easily be done from Cairns. Or for those who want to go all out, combine a boat trip to the reef with a scenic flight back.
