You’ve made it to Rainbow Beach, one of Queensland’s most beautiful coastal towns and your launchpad for K’gari. Check in, dump your bags and get out and explore. The Carlo Sandblow is a short walk away and worth every step, with sweeping views over the coloured cliffs and coastline below.

Spend the day getting to know your fellow travellers, grab a meal in town, and start getting excited. Tonight at 6pm, head to Pippies Beachhouse for your compulsory safety briefing. An early night after that isn’t a bad idea. Tomorrow is a big one.

This is what you came for. After breakfast, you’ll cross to K’gari by ferry at Inskip Point and take the wheel of a Landcruiser 4WD for the first time. Driving 75 Mile Beach with the ocean stretching out beside you is a feeling that’s hard to beat.

Your first stop is Lake McKenzie, one of the purest freshwater lakes in the world, fed entirely by rainwater and fringed with brilliant white silica sand. The water is impossibly clear and beautifully cool. You won’t want to leave.

From there, head into the heart of K’gari’s ancient rainforest at Central Station. Walk the boardwalk along the crystal-clear waters of Wanggoolba Creek, learn about the island’s remarkable natural history, and hear about its deep significance to the Butchulla people, the Traditional Owners of K’gari.

As the afternoon light softens, make your way to camp. Head up to Corrigin Sandblow for a jaw-dropping sunset if you’ve got the legs for it, then come back to a group BBQ, a crackling campfire, and some of the best stargazing in the southern hemisphere.

The biggest day on the island and one you’ll be talking about for years. Start the morning at the Champagne Pools, natural rock pools where ocean waves crash over the edge and bubble up around you. It’s one of the most unique swims in Australia.

Next, climb Indian Head for panoramic views of the coastline and the ocean below. This is K’gari’s best wildlife-spotting vantage point. Keep your eyes peeled for humpback whales (August to October), sharks, sea turtles, dolphins and huge rays gliding through the water beneath you.

After lunch, grab a rubber ring and head to Eli Creek, the largest freshwater creek on the eastern beach, pumping 4 million litres of fresh water into the sea every hour. Walk up the boardwalk and float back down through the cool, clear current. It’s as good as it sounds.

As the sun starts to drop, make your way to the Maheno Shipwreck, a rusting ocean liner half-buried in the sand since 1935. At golden hour, with the coloured sands of the coast behind it, it’s one of the most spectacular sights on the island. Finish the day at the Pinnacles, a stunning stretch of coloured sand formations that runs up the Fraser coastline.

Back at camp, the group cooks spaghetti bolognese and garlic bread together, and another night under the stars awaits.

Last morning on the island, and it’s a good one! After a quick breakfast, drive down the Eastern Beach to Lake Wabby, the deepest lake on K’gari. It’s a 40–45 minute walk through the bush and across the Hammerstone Sandblow to reach it, but arriving at the water’s edge makes every step worthwhile. Take a dip, sit on the shore, and take it all in one last time.

After lunch on the beach, it’s time to cross back to Rainbow Beach. You’ll arrive at Pippies Beachhouse between 1pm and 4:30pm depending on the tides. This will give plenty of time to reunite with your bags, reflect on an incredible few days, and decide where the East Coast takes you next.

Safety briefing: Attendance at the compulsory 6pm safety briefing the night before departure is mandatory. This takes place at Pippies Beachhouse in Rainbow Beach. Missing the briefing means you cannot join the tour.

Driving requirements: Drivers must be 21 years or older and hold a full, open licence that has been held for at least one year. Bring your licence with you on the day. No exceptions.

Fraser Island insurance levy: A $10 insurance levy is payable on arrival on the island and is not included in your tour price.
