K’gari (pronounced “gurri”) is the traditional Butchulla name for what was long known as Fraser Island, and it translates beautifully to “paradise.” In 2023, the island was officially renamed K’gari in recognition of its deep cultural significance to the Butchulla people, the Traditional Owners who have called this island home for tens of thousands of years.
Stretching over 1,840 square kilometres along the southern Queensland coast, K’gari is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site and the largest sand island on earth. It’s a place where the rules of nature don’t quite apply as you’d expect. Freshwater lakes sit atop sand, ancient rainforests thrive without soil, and wild dingoes roam freely as they have for centuries.
For travellers, it’s one of Australia’s most iconic bucket-list destinations. For the Butchulla people, it’s home.
Where do we start? K’gari is packed with natural wonders that genuinely have to be seen to be believed. Here are the highlights you absolutely can’t miss:
Lake McKenzie: One of the most beautiful lakes in the world, full stop. The water is so clear and so impossibly blue that photos never quite do it justice. Fed entirely by rainwater, it’s naturally filtered through the sand, making it one of the purest bodies of water on earth. A swim here is non-negotiable.
75 Mile Beach: K’gari’s main highway and one of the most surreal driving experiences you’ll ever have. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and ancient dunes on the other, this stretch of golden sand goes further than the eye can see.
Eli Creek: The largest freshwater creek on the island’s eastern beach, Eli Creek is the ultimate natural lazy river. Float downstream through crystal-clear water and let the current do all the work.
The Maheno Shipwreck: The rusted hull of the SS Maheno has been sitting on the beach since 1935, slowly being reclaimed by the island. It’s a striking, otherworldly sight and one of the most photographed spots on K’gari.
The Coloured Sands: Stretching along the shoreline near Rainbow Gorge, these naturally occurring sand formations come in over 70 shades, from deep ochre and rust red to soft cream and white. It’s an extraordinary piece of natural art.
Wild Dingoes: K’gari is home to one of Australia’s most pure and protected dingo populations. Spotting one in the wild, roaming freely along the beach or through the forest, is one of those travel moments you genuinely remember forever.
Yes. Fraser Island was officially renamed K’gari in 2023, restoring its traditional Butchulla name. Many people still refer to it as Fraser Island, so both names are commonly used.
As K’gari has no bridges from the mainland, it can be accessed one of two way: by boat or air. Most people access the island by barge or ferry, leaving from Hervey Bay or Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach.
Each tour company is different and leaves from different departure points. Before going on a tour, make sure you confirm which point your tour is leaving from!
If you are over the age of 21, and you have a current open drivers license, then yes. All tag along tours conduct a comprehensive briefing prior to the trip departure (usually the day prior). Your tour guide will give you an outline of the trip at the briefing, as well as plenty of information and guidance regarding driving along the beach in a 4-wheel drive. Please note that different tours have different restrictions and age limits for drivers.
A 2 or 3-day tag-along 4WD tour is the most popular option for backpackers, as it combines 4×4 driving, freshwater lake swims, beach camping, and a ready-made social group all in one.
A tag-along tour means you drive your own 4WD vehicle as part of a convoy led by a guide. It’s brilliant for solo travellers because you join a small group, share costs, and get the freedom of driving yourself without navigating alone.
Tours start from around $279 AUD for a guided day tour, rising to $549–$694 AUD for 2- or 3-day camping and tag-along adventures. Prices vary depending on tour length and accommodation style.
Absolutely. There are options across all budgets, from basic swag camping under the stars to eco-resort day tours. Tag-along tours are particularly good value because costs like fuel and permits are shared across the group.
