K’gari (Fraser Island) Discovery Small Group 2-Day Tour From $795pp Now On Sale $715pp

White sand, crystal lakes, and wild beauty. K’gari in two action-packed, breathtaking days with a brilliant small group.

Jump aboard a small-group 4WD coach with a maximum of 11 fellow adventurers as you roll onto K’gari’s famous 75 Mile Beach ‘highway’. From there, the island reveals itself layer by layer: towering satinay trees in the rainforests of Pile Valley, the impossibly clear waters of Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), and the eerie beauty of the SS Maheno shipwreck rusting into the sand.

Float through Eli Creek, explore Central Station’s lush boardwalks beside Wanggoolba Creek, and if tides permit, escape the crowds at serene Lake Birrabeen. Your expert local guide brings it all to life with stories of the island’s Butchulla heritage and native wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for wongari (dingoes) roaming the shoreline.

Nights are spent at an exclusive beachside camp in powered permanent bell tents, unwinding with a sunset platter and BBQ dinner beneath the stars. K’gari is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: 75 Mile Beach, Pile Valley, Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie)

Depending on your pick-up point, you will be collected from either Noosa or Rainbow Beach, where you will then board the ferry from Inskip Point. Keep an eye out for dolphins and dugongs as you cross to K’gari.

On arrival, strap in and cruise down the famous 75 Mile Beach before heading inland to Pile Valley for a walk among towering satinay and brush box trees. Continue to the jewel of the island, Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), for a picnic lunch and a swim in its impossibly clear freshwater. Your guide will share stories of K’gari’s ecology and the island’s Butchulla heritage, including how to safely share the island with its wild wongari (dingoes).

In the late afternoon, head back to the coast to check in at your exclusive permanent bell tent camp. Wind down with a sunset platter on the beach, a hearty Aussie BBQ dinner under the stars, and gather around the campfire. If the night sky is clear, your guide will lead a short walk for a special K’gari Star Show.

Accomodation: Permanent Powered Bell Tent (Twin share)
Meals Included:  Lunch, Dinner
Driving Time: 6hrs from Noosa, 4hrs from Rainbow Beach

Day 2: Eli Creek, SS Maheno Shipwreck, Lake Birrabeen, Central Station, Wanggoolba Creek

Rise early to watch the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean before breakfast at camp. Head north along 75 Mile Beach to Eli Creek. Float downstream through crystal-clear freshwater in one of the island’s most popular natural swimming spots.

Next, step back in time at the SS Maheno Shipwreck, a rusted ocean liner that met the shore in a 1935 cyclone, and hear the stories behind its dramatic history. Continue inland along the Southern Lakes Circuit to the tranquil Lake Birrabeen (weather and tide dependent), a stunning and often crowd-free alternative to Lake McKenzie. Visit Central Station and stroll the peaceful boardwalks beside serene Wanggoolba Creek, once a logging camp and now a lush rainforest haven.

After a picnic lunch, it’s time to farewell K’gari. Head south along the beach to board the ferry back to the mainland, and then onwards to either Rainbow Beach or Noosa.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a 4WD tour, does this mean it will be rough?

Every day on K’gari (Fraser Island) is different, which is all part of the 4WD experience! As soon as you reach Inskip point, the rest of the driving is on sand and very rough 4WD tracks. Some days this can be a pretty smooth journey, other days quite bumpy. Weather and traffic are two big factors in how the conditions of the tracks vary, so it’s hard to predict beforehand. But don’t worry, your tour guides are experts at driving these tracks and will ensure it goes as smoothly as possible. Just expect some bumps along the way. If you have a medical condition or are concerned about the 4WD element of the tour, please reach out to discuss prior to booking.

What type of vehicle will we be travelling in?

You’ll travel in a purpose-built all-terrain 4WD coach. K’gari has no conventional roads, the island’s main thoroughfare is 75 Mile Beach itself, so a specialist 4WD vehicle is essential to access everything on the itinerary.

Will I be able to swim?

Yes! Swimming in Lake McKenzie is a highlight of this tour and guests love this part. It is made of some of the freshest water you can find and is a great way to cool down and refresh yourself. To help keep this environment pristine, we ask that passengers apply any sunscreen at least 20 minutes before entering the water to ensure it is fully absorbed by the skin preventing excess pollutants from entering the waters. Being fresh water also, people find they don’t float as easily as they do in the sea. We therefore ask guests to be mindful of their own swimming abilities.

What time will I be picked up in the morning?

Rainbow Beach departures meet at 7:30am outside Freedom Hostel. Noosa departures are picked up from their accommodation between 5:20 and 5:45am. Exact times may vary depending on tides and conditions.

What time will I be dropped off at the end of the tour?

Rainbow Beach passengers can expect to be dropped back at approximately 3:00-4:30pm on Day 2. Noosa passengers return later, arriving back around 6:00-7:00pm.

Do I need to reconfirm my booking?

You will receive a check-in link 7 days before your departure. This is how you can reconfirm your booking and your pickup location, update any other details like dietary requirements or special needs, and  purchase the Optional Vehicle Damage Liability reduction if you would like to drive on the island.

What should I wear for my tour?

Comfort is key, so we recommend you wear weather appropriate clothing and comfortable footwear you can walk in. In the winter it can be a bit chilly, so bring a sweater, and bring a lightweight rain jacket just in case. Be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen as the Australian sun is no joke and it can be a very hot and dry day on the island.

Can I bring luggage with me?

Please bring a day bag only as there is limited space onboard the vehicle. Most accommodation will offer luggage storage, otherwise you can call Discovery’s reservation team to discuss storage options.

Can dietary requirements be catered for?

Most dietary requirements can be catered for – just be sure to give advance notice. We recommend anyone with dietary requirements notify us at the time of booking.

What level of fitness or mobility is required?

This is a relaxed tour with a fitness rating of 2/5. The walking is light, mostly flat, easy tracks and boardwalks, with distances of around 2-5 km per day. No specialist fitness is required, though comfortable walking shoes are a must.

Getting in and out of the bus may be difficult for some people. The first step up can be quite high and the exact height varies depending on where the bus is parked due to the sand car parks. Of course you will have assistance if you need it.rnrnIf you are unsure or would like to discuss further, please reach out.

Are tours suitable for children?

Due to child vehicle restraint laws in QLD and limited anchor points for child booster seats, this tour unfortunately cannot take children under the age of 5 years.

For children over 5 years, we ask parents to consider if the tour is suitable for your particular child due the length of the day, the length of time spent on the bus and the limited amenities for attending to children throughout the day. For children aged between 5 and 8, booster seats can be provided and must be requested at the time of booking. If you have young children and would like to know more, please reach out prior to booking.

Can I join the tour if I’m pregnant?

We generally don’t recommend joining the tour if you are past 28 weeks for your own comfort, however it is up to your own discretion. If you’re unsure please speak with your doctor as they are best equipped to advise you on medical issues.

What will happen if it rains on the day of my tour?

K’gari (Fraser Island) is beautiful in all types of weather, particularly the rainforest which really comes alive when it rains. Tours will go ahead during any weather unless it poses a safety risk to passengers. We recommend passengers check average weather expectations for their time of visit and bring adequate clothing for that day.

Will I see dingos?

K’gari (Fraser Island) is home to around 200 wild dingoes and guests often see them on tours. They are wild animals though and we encourage them to maintain their natural instincts and behaviours by refraining from trying to attract them. This makes every day different and special and means that we can’t guarantee sightings on every tour.

Are dingos dangerous?

Sadly, some human behaviours have led to modified dingo behaviour, such as feeding them or leaving scraps out for them. While it may seem like ‘helping’ the dingoes, such behaviours can lead to some dingoes associating humans with food and thus creating negative encounters. We therefore strictly enforce the guidelines set by Queensland Parks and Wildlife which ensure the safety of not only our customers, but also the wonderful wildlife of the island. Your guide for the day will provide you with more information throughout the day to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable tour.

What time do we catch the ferry to the island?

Please Note that the tides may impact the times that the ferry arrives and departs K’Gari (Fraser Island), so that may also impact the length of the time you spend at each of the attractions listed in the itinerary. The order of destinations may also be affected by the tides. Your guide will advise you on the day of travel.

Do I need travel insurance?

We endorse the recommendation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that all travelers take out travel insurance. If you already have Travel Insurance please understand that it is your responsibility to ensure that your Travel Insurance covers you for all of the adventure style travel you have booked with us.

World Nomads travel insurance policies offer coverage for more than 150 activities. Get a quote, make a claim, or buy or extend your policy while on the road.

Will I have mobile phone reception on the island?

Mobile reception on K’gari is limited and unreliable in many areas. We recommend downloading anything you need before departure, ensuring your devices are fully charged, and bringing a power bank. The multilingual audio guide app should also be downloaded before the tour begins.
