Frequently Asked Questions

Will I see turtles and sharks?

The Great Barrier Reef contains thousands of different species of marine life. We cannot guarantee what marine life you will see on your day of travel, however there will be many different species of fish, coral and mollusks. Giant green sea turtles are found around the Great Barrier Reef and are frequently sighted at Fitzroy Island. Reef sharks are quite common and a wonderful sight to see.

Can you swim at Fitzroy Island all year round?

Due to its position in Tropical Far North Queensland, visitors to Fitzroy Island are able to enjoy warm water for swimming and water activities all year round.

Are there Crocs at Fitzroy Island?

Saltwater crocodiles won’t come this far out to the reef so you don’t need to worry about those! Plus, the water around Fitzroy Island is warm and clear year-round, making it excellent for swimming. If you don’t want to swim, you can opt for the iconic glass-bottom boat tour.

Do turtles hatch on Fitzroy Island?

More than 700 tiny green sea turtles have hatched on Fitzroy Island and swam to freedom on the Great Barrier Reef in Tropical North Queensland.

What is the snorkelling like on the island?

Snorkelling in Welcome Bay and off Nudey Beach offers the chance to explore a fringing reef supporting many species of fish and invertebrates. Opt for one of the guided tours to get to know the reef a little better or go at your own pace with the equipment hire.

When is the best time to go to the Great Barrier Reef?

The Great Barrier Reef is beautiful all year round. The stinger season is from around November to May. It is unlikely that box jellyfish would be encountered at Fitzroy Island due to the 4 km passage between the island and the mainland, but they have been found there occasionally, as well as other stinging jellyfish. During this time it is recommended to wear a stinger suit. These are available on the island.

Can we walk around the whole Island?

Fitzroy Island is a large island with rugged terrain and sometimes impenetrable vegetation. Walking tracks in the national park provide visitors with the opportunity to explore a range of vegetation communities and scenic landscapes. There are four walks available, from 25 mins return to 3 hrs return. Ensure to take water with you on any of the walks. There is not a track around the island.
