First Time in Fiji? Everything You Need to Know

By: Ryan Baldwin February 25, 2026
Let's be real, Fiji has been on your vision board for a while. Crystal-clear water, white sand beaches, snorkelling with manta rays, and the kind of "Bula!" welcome that makes you feel like a legend the second you step off the plane.
But between figuring out which islands to visit, whether to go flexible or all-inclusive, and how on earth the ferry system works - planning a Fiji trip can feel way more complicated than it should be.
That's where we come in. This is your complete Fiji travel guide - the same info our expert team shares with travellers every single day, now all in one place.

Why Fiji? (In Case You Need Convincing)

Fiji isn't just a tropical island - it's 333 of them. Warm water year-round. World-class snorkelling and diving. Incredibly friendly locals. And a pace of life so relaxed they literally have a name for it: "Fiji Time."

Translation? You're swapping rush hour for reef hour. Your commute is now a catamaran ferry. And your office view? Yeah - it's the Yasawa Islands.

It's also incredibly well-suited for backpackers and young travellers - affordable dorm options, easy island hopping, loads of activities, and a social atmosphere that makes it dead easy to meet people.

Best Time to Visit Fiji

The good news? Fiji is a year-round destination. Here's how the seasons break down:

โ˜€๏ธ Mayโ€“October (Dry Season): Cooler temps, less rain, and - he big one - manta ray season. This is peak time and it books out fast. If you want to snorkel with mantas, this is your window.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Novemberโ€“April (Wet Season): More tropical showers (usually short bursts, not all-day rain), warmer water temps, and fewer crowds. Still brilliant snorkelling and great value.

๐Ÿ“… Pro tip: Book at least 3 months out to lock in preferred rooms and ferry routes - especially around manta season and school holidays. Fiji sells out more than most people expect.

Month Avg Temp (ยฐC) Rainfall Best For
January 26โ€“30 ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Lush landscapes, NYE parties, low crowds
February 26โ€“31 ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Great deals, hot & humid
March 26โ€“30 ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Waterfalls, off-peak travel
April 25โ€“29 ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Shoulder season starts, fewer crowds
May 24โ€“28 โ˜€๏ธ Perfect for beach days & snorkelling
June 23โ€“27 โ˜€๏ธ Great for couples & sailing trips
July 22โ€“26 โ˜€๏ธ Ideal snorkelling & diving conditions
August 22โ€“27 โ˜€๏ธ Surfing, festivals, great weather
September 23โ€“28 โ˜€๏ธ Romance, fewer crowds
October 24โ€“29 ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Fiji Day, shoulder season deals
November 25โ€“30 ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Cheap flights, green season begins
December 26โ€“31 ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Hot, festive, great for partygoers
Yasawa Islands

The Yasawa Islands: Fiji's Crown Jewel

When most backpackers think of Fiji, they're thinking of the Yasawa Islands - a stunning chain of 20 volcanic islands stretching 80km north of Nadi.

This is where you'll find the Yasawa Flyer ferry that connects everything, the iconic Blue Lagoon, the famous snorkelling cave at Sawa-i-Lau, and some of the most remote beaches on the planet.

The islands are accessible via the Yasawa Flyer - a daily catamaran ferry that departs Nadi (Port Denarau) at 8:45am. It's the main artery of island hopping in Fiji and the backbone of most Happy Travels packages.

Two Ways to Do Fiji: Flexible vs. Inclusive

This is where most people get confused - so let's clear it up fast.

๐ŸŒŠ Flexible Island Hopping (7โ€“15 Days)

Choose your own adventure. Your package includes pre and post nights in Nadi, all inter-island ferries, airport and port transfers. You pick your islands and book activities when you arrive. Great if you like flexibility and spontaneity.

Stay options: Dorms ($), standard privates ($$), or upgraded beachfront privates ($$$).

๐Ÿ“‹ Inclusive Fixed Itinerary

Everything locked in before you go. Pre and post Nadi nights, ferries, all transfers, and a pre-paid activity pack. Available in durations from 6 to 14 days. Perfect for those who want the planning done.

Getting to Fiji & Arrival Tips

You'll fly into Nadi International Airport (NAN). Here's the critical thing most first-timers miss:

The Yasawa Flyer departs at 8:45am - and you need to be checked in 30 minutes prior. That means unless your flight lands by 6:00am, you'll need a pre-night in Nadi. All Happy Travels packages include this automatically.

On arrival at Nadi, head to the end of the building and look for Selva Tours for your transfer to your hotel. On ferry day, transfers from your hotel to Port Denarau are also included.

Luggage tip: Pack like you're going on a boat - because you are. One carry-on plus one checked bag (up to ~25kg). You may need to carry your bag across the beach to board, so bring what you can comfortably handle.

What's Included & What's Not

Happy Travels packages include: accommodation, inter-island ferries, pre/post Nadi nights, and all transfers. Here's what you'll need to budget for separately:

โœ”๏ธ Flights: You book these yourself. Fly into Nadi (NAN).

โœ”๏ธ Meals on the islands: Paid directly to each resort at check-in. Budget around AUD $100 per person per day - menu or buffet style, high quality. (No shops or cafes on the islands.)

โœ”๏ธ Activities (Flexible option): Booked and paid on arrival at each island.

โœ”๏ธ Travel insurance: Strongly recommended. We don't sell it, but look for a policy covering missed tours, medical, and natural events.
