Kick off your K’gari adventure at Freedom Hostel in Rainbow Beach for a 7am safety briefing, where you’ll meet your guides and your convoy crew for the next two days. Then it’s straight onto the barge and across to the island.

Once you hit 75 Mile Beach, the fun starts immediately: windows down, music up, and the ocean stretching out beside you as you cruise along one of the most unique highways on the planet. Pull up at the eerie wreck of the SS Maheno, the rusting skeleton of a once-great ocean liner, and hear the story of how it ended up stranded on a remote island beach.

In the afternoon, drift downstream through Eli Creek, a natural freshwater stream that delivers you gently through the bush and back out to the sand. By sunset, you’ll be set up at your dingo-safe campsite just metres from the beach, swapping stories over a hot dinner and a cold drink as the stars appear overhead.

After breakfast and breaking camp, it’s back onto 75 Mile Beach for another morning of open-air driving before heading south towards the island’s lush interior. Cruise into Central Station and step into a completely different world: ancient rainforest, towering satinay trees, and the crystal-clear waters of Wanggoolba Creek. Your guide will walk you through the ecological and cultural significance of this remarkable place, once the heart of the island’s timber industry.

Then it’s on to the undisputed highlight of K’gari: Lake McKenzie. This perched freshwater lake sits above the water table and is fed purely by rainfall, filtered through pure white silica sand. The result is water so clear and so impossibly blue it almost doesn’t look real. Swim, float, lie on the sand and take it all in. After lunch, make your way back along 75 Mile Beach for the barge crossing to Rainbow Beach, arriving back at Freedom Hostel between 3 and 5pm.

Driver Requirements: MUST be 21yrs or over with a FULL manual license, that has been held this license for 1 year minimum. You must have the license with you. (International permits not accompanied by a national license will not be accepted).

Itineraries may be changed due to tides and weather conditions to ensure we maximise your time on K’gari (Fraser Island). Your guide will advise of the planned itinerary and the day’s activities at the start of the tour.

All meals across both days (lunch and dinner Day 1, breakfast and lunch Day 2), fuel for your 4WD, camping gear (tent, camp mat, pillow and sleeping bag), all National Park and vehicle permits, return ferry transfers, and 4WD driver training on the beach.

BYO alcohol is welcome (cans only, no glass or hard liquor). Firewood can be purchased at Freedom Hostel. An optional Vehicle Damage Liability Reduction is available to reduce your excess if you plan to drive.

If you’ve never driven a 4WD before, no worries. Guides run a full beach training session before departure, and you’re in convoy the whole time. This tour suits solo travellers, couples, and small groups equally well. You must be 21+ with a full licence held for at least 1 year to drive.

Two days is genuinely enough time to hit all the major highlights: 75 Mile Beach, the Maheno Shipwreck, Eli Creek, Central Station, and Lake McKenzie. If you want to slow down and go deeper, check out the 3-day option instead.

Pack light as space in the vehicles is limited. Bring a small bag only (larger bags can be stored free at Freedom Hostel during your tour). Essentials include warm clothes for the evenings, a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, insect repellent, a torch, camera, portable speaker, baby wipes, any extra snacks, and $2 coins for hot showers. Charging options on the island are limited, so come prepared.

If you want to bring alcohol, cans only: no glass, no hard liquor, no goon. Pre-mixed cans are fine, and any spirits must be decanted into plastic bottles before your morning safety briefing. If you plan to drive, don’t forget your licence.

Dingos K’gari departs from Freedom Hostel, 20 Spectrum Street, Rainbow Beach.

The tour returns to Freedom Hostel and has an estimated arrival between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

Please note, it’s best to not take the 5pm northbound Greyhound to Airlie Beach. We can’t guarantee you’ll make it on time, and unfortunately, we can’t take responsibility if you miss it. But not to worry, Greyhound has a 7pm service that we highly recommend! It gives you ample time to head back to Rainbow Beach, freshen up with a shower, and gather your things before catching that bus. Much smoother and stress-free!

Dingos cancellation & Refund Policy: Refunds will be processed according to the following time frames.

Yes, the safety briefing is required to take part in your Fraser Island tour and is non negotiable. It covers important information on what to expect on the island, including safety and potential emergency situations. This is held the morning of the tour from 7am at Freedom Rainbow Beach.

Your exact return time depends on tides and conditions on the island and this may vary to ensure maximum time at each location we visit. As a general rule, we advise you will return to Freedom Hostel somewhere between 2pm and 5pm.

Please note, we do not recommend the 5pm northbound Greyhound to Airlie Beach. We can’t guarantee you’ll make it on time, and unfortunately, we can’t take responsibility if you miss it. Absolutely! To take the wheel on our adventure, all drivers must be 21 years old with a full license, held for at least 1 year. Don’t forget to bring that license along with you!

If you’re jet-setting in from overseas, make sure to pack your international driver’s license. Just a heads-up: an international driver’s license alone won’t cut it – we need the combo with your national license for a smooth journey.

If you do not meet these requirements, no worries! You’re still more than welcome to join the tour, but the driver’s seat will have to wait for next time. Safety first, adventure second!

As a general rule, if you are wanting to drive on the island, we always recommend purchasing the Vehicle Damage Liability Reduction to cover you in the event of unforeseen circumstances. 

Due to the nature of our Tag Along style tours, it is our number one priority to keep all passengers safe. Please read the below rules carefully prior to purchasing your alcohol for our tour:

We offer free luggage storage at Freedom Rainbow Beach for Dingo’s customers – please see your guide you at your safety briefing to organise this. If you’ve got some items you’d rather lock away, we suggest grabbing a locker at Freedom Hostel. All it takes is a small padlock to keep your valuables secure.

Please note, luggage stored with us, is at the owner’s risk. Dingo’s K’gari Adventures is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items. Please keep valuables with you and secure your bags before leaving them.

Our private camp is packed with everything you need: a fully-equipped kitchen and BBQ area, common area, hot showers (you will need $2 coins to operate), and flushing toilets. We’ve got all the essentials covered to make your stay as comfortable as can be.

Being a remote location, medical assistance and emergency services may take several hours to reach us. Plus, they can come with a hefty price tag.

While we’ve got precautions in place, it is highly recommended all guests have travel insurance to cover you in the event of unforeseen injury or illness.

Anyone who has a condition which requires medication, please ensure you take adequate supplies for your trip. Guests who have a condition that may become exasperated while on tour, such as asthma, diabetes or a severe allergy, should notify Dingo’s at time of booking and should notify your guide.
