Before You Go: A Few Things to Know

Before we dive into the day-by-day, a quick lay of the land. Fiji is made up of over 330 islands, but most backpackers base themselves around three main areas:

  • Nadi — the main hub, where you'll land and get your bearings
  • The Mamanuca Islands — close to the mainland, great for a quick island fix
  • The Yasawa Islands — the more remote, postcard-perfect chain further north

Getting between islands is done via the famous Yasawa Flyer - a ferry that runs daily from Port Denarau in Nadi up through the Mamanucas and Yasawas. It's your best mate for any Fiji island hopping itinerary.

Pro tip: A Bula Pass (multi-stop ferry pass) is the most flexible and cost-effective way to island-hop. Check out our Fiji tours and packages to find the best option for your trip.

Fiji Itinerary: 7 Days

Best for: First-timers wanting a solid taste of paradise without island-hopping overload.

Days 1–2: Nadi & The Mainland

Touch down in Nadi and give yourself a day to recover from the flight and get your bearings. Nadi isn't the most glamorous spot in Fiji, but it's worth a wander - hit the local markets, grab a kava ceremony experience, and get some cheap eats before the islands get all your money.

Day two, head to Port Denarau and take a day trip to one of the nearby Mamanuca Islands for a sneak preview of what's to come. Cloud Break (one of the world's best surf breaks) is right on your doorstep if you ride waves.

Days 3–5: Yasawa Islands

Board the Yasawa Flyer and head north. For a 7-day Fiji itinerary, we'd suggest stopping at Wayasewa or Kuata for snorkelling and hiking, then continuing up to Naviti for some of the best coral in the chain.

The Yasawas are where Fiji really earns its reputation. Think: hammocks, crystal water, fire dances, and kava with the locals every night. Don't rush it.

Days 6–7: Slow Down & Head Back

Use your final days to slow right down. Sleep in. Snorkel. Eat too much fresh fish. Get the ferry back to Nadi on day seven and either fly out that evening or grab one last night on the mainland before heading home.

7-day highlights: Nadi markets → Mamanuca day trip → Yasawa Islands → kava ceremonies → snorkelling → ferry back

Days Location Activities Highlights
1-2 Nadi & The Mainland Local markets, kava ceremony, Mamanuca day trip Cloud Break surf, cheap eats, Port Denarau
3-5 Yasawa Islands Snorkelling, hiking, kava with locals, fire dances Wayasewa & Kuata snorkelling, Naviti coral reefs
6-7 Yasawas & Back to Nadi Snorkelling, relaxing, ferry back to mainland Final beach days, fresh fish, fly out or last night in Nadi

Ready to make it happen? Our 7 Day 6 Night Fiji Island Escape has everything sorted for you - just show up, say bula, and let us handle the rest.

Fiji Itinerary: 10 Days

Best for: Backpackers who want to island-hop properly and actually feel like they've lived in Fiji for a bit.

Days 1–2: Nadi & Surrounds

Same start as the 7-day — land, recover, explore Nadi. With a bit more time up your sleeve, consider a half-day trip to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant or a surf lesson at one of the beach clubs.

Days 3–4: Mamanuca Islands

Rather than skipping past the Mamanucas, spend a couple of nights here. Mana Island is a backpacker favourite — great vibes, reliable surf, solid snorkelling. This is also where Castaway Island (yes, from the movie) sits, if that's your thing.

Days 5–8: Yasawa Islands

Now you've got time to really explore. Head up to the Yasawa Islands and make multiple stops — Wayasewa for the shark cave dive, Naviti for coral, and further north to Nacula or Tavewa for the most remote, picture-perfect beaches in the chain.

Four nights in the Yasawas lets you actually connect with a place rather than just ticking boxes. Stay in village guesthouses, join the nightly kava circle, and hike to clifftop views that'll make your Instagram followers very jealous.

Days 9–10: Wind Down in Nadi

Head back to the mainland with a day to spare. Treat yourself to a spa, grab souvenirs from the markets, and do a sunset dinner at one of Nadi's waterfront restaurants. You've earned it.

10-day highlights: Mamanuca surf → shark cave dive → Yasawa village stays → clifftop hikes → sunset dinner on the mainland

Days Location Activities Highlights
1-2 Nadi & Surrounds Explore Nadi, Garden of the Sleeping Giant, surf lessons Beach clubs, local markets, recover & recharge
3-4 Mamanuca Islands Surfing, snorkelling, island exploring Mana Island backpacker scene, Castaway Island, Cloud Break surf
5-8 Yasawa Islands Shark cave dive, snorkelling, village stays, clifftop hikes, kava circle Wayasewa shark dive, Naviti coral, Nacula & Tavewa remote beaches
9-10 Back to Nadi Spa, souvenir shopping, sunset dinner Waterfront restaurants, markets, final night on the mainland

Sound like your kind of trip? Check out our 9 Day 8 Night Ultimate Fiji Getaway - it's the perfect match for this itinerary and one of our most popular Fiji packages for a reason.

Fiji Itinerary: 14 Days

What to do in Fiji for 2 weeks? This.

Best for: Gap year travellers, working holiday makers, and anyone who wants the full Fiji experience — not just the highlights reel.

Days 1–2: Nadi Base Camp

Arrive, settle in, get your Bula Pass sorted. Take the time to actually explore Nadi properly — the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple is stunning, the local food markets are great for cheap eats, and the people are some of the friendliest you'll meet anywhere in the world.

Days 3–4: Mamanuca Islands

Spend two nights in the Mamanucas. If you surf, this is non-negotiable — Cloud Break and Restaurants are world-class waves. If you don't surf, the snorkelling, beach-bar culture, and laid-back island vibes are more than enough reason to linger.

Days 5–10: Yasawa Islands Deep Dive

Six nights in the Yasawas is where the real magic happens. This is the itinerary for people who want to feel Fiji, not just see it.

Suggested stops:

  • Kuata / Wayasewa — snorkelling, shark dive, and first taste of village life
  • Naviti — best coral snorkelling in the Yasawa chain
  • Nacula — stunning Blue Lagoon beaches (yes, that Blue Lagoon)
  • Tavewa / Sawa-I-Lau — ancient limestone caves and remote beaches

Move every 1–2 nights using the Yasawa Flyer, or grab a Bula Pass that lets you hop on and off as you please. There's no wrong way to do the Yasawas — just give yourself enough time to actually breathe.

Days 11–12: Back to the Mamanucas (Bonus Round)

On your way back south, stop in at a different Mamanuca island you missed on the way up. Tokoriki is great for snorkelling, while Malolo has a good backpacker scene if you're after a few more social nights before the trip ends.

Days 13–14: Nadi Finale

Two full days back in Nadi to decompress. Get a traditional Fijian massage, pick up some handwoven souvenirs, grab a cold Fiji Bitter at a local bar, and start mentally preparing to go back to real life (sorry).

14-day highlights: Surf at Cloud Break → shark cave dive → Blue Lagoon beaches → limestone caves → village kava nights → Nadi goodbye dinner

Days Location Activities Highlights
1-2 Nadi Base Camp Explore Nadi, temple visit, local food markets, get Bula Pass sorted Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, cheap eats, friendly locals
3-4 Mamanuca Islands Surfing, snorkelling, beach bar culture Cloud Break & Restaurants surf, laid-back island vibes

Fiji Travel Tips for Backpackers

Planning a Fiji travel itinerary as a backpacker? Here's what you need to know:

Getting around: The Yasawa Flyer departs from Port Denarau daily. Buy a Bula Pass for multi-stop flexibility — it's the most popular option for backpackers doing a Fiji island hopping itinerary.

Where to stay: Village guesthouses and backpacker resorts dominate the Yasawas. Dorm beds are cheap and the vibe is always social. Think shared meals, beach bonfires, and new mates from around the world.

Kava: You will drink kava. You will be offered kava everywhere. Say yes. Clap once before you drink, say "bula", clap three times after. You're now practically Fijian.

Money: Bring Fijian dollars (FJD). Many outer islands are cash-only, so stock up in Nadi before you board the ferry.

Connectivity: Don't expect great WiFi in the Yasawas — and honestly, that's the point. Disconnect for a few days. It'll do you good.

Best time to go: May to October is the dry season and generally the best time to visit, with lower humidity and minimal rain. That said, Fiji is pretty great year-round.

Our 7 Day 6 Night Fiji Island Escape is the perfect package to make the most of your week – just don’t spend too long on the mainland!
